They are commercially fished (wild-caught) & grown via aquaculture in SE Asia/Indonesia, producing a product with slightly less distinctive coloration.

Because they grow so rapidly, they can actually be grown sustainably & harvesting avoids the cannibalism sometimes common during population booms.

The fiddler crab (Uca minax) has taste receptors on their legs and claws, a property called "dactyl chemoreception".

By sensing sweet (hexose sugar), umami (glutamate) and salts (esp. ammonium chloride), they can navigate salt marshes to locate decaying food items.

- Exoskeleton: extra protection against blunt damage
- Chemoreception on feet: heigthened perception of surroundings (could also be a disadvantage)
- Extra limbs: three sets for locomotion and one or two pairs of wings.
- Poison & Venom capability for defense
- Eusociality: formation of colonies

5 main senses:
Photoreception (Sight) 👀
Audioreception (Hearing) 🙉
Mechanoreception (Touch) 🫵
Gustatory chemoreception (Taste) 👄
Olfactory chemoreception (Smell) 👃

Lesser known senses of awareness:
Proprioception (body position) 💪

AChemS researchers study individual differences in taste perception, including genetic variations that affect bitter sensitivity. Understanding why some people are supertasters helps explain why we don't all experience the same foods the same way.
