Cheonggyecheon Fluss-Wiederherstellung in #Seoul: super Beispiel, wie man in asiatischen Städten mit dem Autoproblem umgeht.

Cheonggyecheon is proof that removing highways can make cities better. 20 years ago, Seoul replaced concrete with a stream, and the results are remarkable: cooler temperatures, cleaner air, and 12 million visitors annually.

In the heart of Seoul, a ribbon of water now threads through where an expanse of asphalt once stood. The Cheonggyecheon Stream restoration, which replaced a major elevated motorway with an ecological and recreational corridor, has become a powerful case study in placemaking and traffic evaporation.🧵

That's wonderful. Whenever I go back to Seoul I always go for a stroll along Cheonggyecheon and think of how it looked when I first lived bearby

Never forget that when Seoul, Korea removed the Cheonggyecheon expressway in 2003 and replaced it with a restored stream, 1000 acre park and key transit improvements, not only did it transform the city’s public life & economic success, but the traffic got better.

The traffic got BETTER.

Cities are for people, not for cars. Seoul’s Cheonggyecheon may be the world’s best example of that.

Cheonggyecheon Stream was converted into a pedestrian recreational area 20 years ago. It also cools the surrounding neighbourhoods, reduces air pollution, and helps control monsoon floods. Wildlife, including 666 plant and species, has returned. https://buff.ly/4auWJSg

Two decades after the Cheonggyecheon motorway removal, this waterway is now deeply embedded in Seoul’s identity: as a place to meet, walk, breathe and enjoy. For other metropolises dealing with aging auto-infrastructure, it is living proof of what’s possible when a city dares to let go of the road.🔚

As cities worldwide grapple with ageing highway infrastructure and the need to cut emissions while adapting to climate change, Seoul’s Cheonggyecheon corridor offers a compelling option.
