Many of the stones have been restored from destruction by United Fruit workers & are on display in various Costa Rican museums, government buildings, as artifacts of national pride.

Note: 'Diquís' is a region & 'Diquís people' is a generic term that includes the Chibchan.

There are at least 300 of these spheres, most found at a single site 'Finca 6' (Farm 6). They've been carved by hammering with other stones, then likely polished with sand.

The indigenous people of Costa Rica who are believed to have produced them, the Chibchan, are no longer extant.

They were built ~300-1500 CE.

One theory holds that the stones represented celestial spheres (stars, planets), were representations of pantheons, or markers of rank.

They are triumphs of skill, beautiful & enigmatic, the last record of the Chibchan people & culture that disappeared post-Contact.
A sphere larger than a typical adult human is being excavated by shovel by a man in a black shirt and jeans. The rock sphere has exfoliated a patch, and resembles the Death Star from Star Trek: The Battlestar of Galactica.

The Chibchan were artisans of stone, but we're not certain of the specific meaning of these spheres. They're not "supernaturally precise", they have some asymmetry & they're of all different sizes.

Most were half-buried, sometimes in rows, so they could have been a way of marking sacred sites.
