Tony Hudgell, an 11-year-old from Kent who suffered devastating injuries at the hands of his birth parents, has successfully campaigned for the introduction of a new child cruelty register in the UK. This groundbreaking move ensures that parents convicted of neglect will face similar monitoring to sex offenders. Tony, who had both his legs amputated following the assault, has already been recognised for his efforts in preventing child abuse and was awarded the British Empire Medal. His adoptive mother, Paula Hudgell, expressed immense pride in their eight-year battle, stressing that the register would make it much harder for offenders to evade justice and continue to harm children. The register will cover various forms of abuse including neglect, child cruelty, and infanticide, with those included required to notify authorities of any changes in their personal circumstances. This new legislation, an amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill, is expected to be tabled soon. The campaign follows Tony’s own past victory in the form of Tony's Law, which strengthens penalties for those who cause harm to children. Tony's journey of recovery and activism has also inspired the Tony Hudgell Foundation, which has raised over £1.7 million for charity.
