Mystery Chilli #5, against all odds, is another purple chinense. Unlike the other one, this doesn't have dark foliage and is more modest in size.

Committed a wrongness when I moved some plants around to share the diminishing light.

This Red Basque's growth was supported by its neighbours, so it had no need to strengthen its stems. Once they'd moved, the slightest breeze made it split under the weight of its pods. Should have staked it 🙄 🌱🌶️

All the colours on this one.

Still not sure what it is, but I'll be saving seeds.

I found a gem of a Fatalii when I rooted under the canopy. There are loads of these but they're green, late due to the summer heat. Hopefully if I move it to the greenhouse, there's warmth and time for more to ripen. 🌶️🌱

Slow to ripen too. They're supposed to be cold-tolerant, but like 'heat loving' chinense (as noted this year), that's not quite how it works. Pubescens have been the first to die when the greenhouse got cold, 2 year's running.

Still, pretty flowers, and with the current mad climate you never know 🤞

I was amazed by the flavour it retained with the Aji Limon and SRP powders - a really nice surprise. Not tried it with a chinense, though, and Fatalii ought to be a good one.

Yuge indeed. Much fruit?

Mine's not a bad size, but not a single pod; one of a number of chinense that has refused to set. Pretty sure it's just been too hot here, cos every plant that was positioned to receive afternoon shade has been crazy-laden. Buying a shade net for next year 🫤

I think the problem is that capsicum chinense just isn’t an especially tasty fruit to begin with and the more you breed varietals to concentrate capsaicin the more you tend to also concentrate the astringent and bitter compounds.

Actually an annuum, although they look like chinense, and some seed sellers have them mislabelled as such.
September 5, 2026 at 7:06 AM
All my Chinense are in the GH so they’ve been hitting extreme temperatures.

I’ve been mist spraying my guys first thing in AM and last thing in the evening before I close the door (which is otherwise open all day), just to raise humidity.

I’ve got so many pods, load of flowers now though too late.

Yeah, mine is growing like Billy-O, no fruit though. I feel like I've done em wrong, but as I say, a weird year. Turns out chinense don't love heat - they're just less tolerant of extremes.

Which is unfortunate, because I think we might have extremes for a few years yet...

That's a brilliant haul! My NM only set a single fruit until I moved it outside*, now there's a bunch of them but it's a race against the weather to bring them to ripeness

(*see also all my chinense, apart from the crazy purple thing going crazy that was outside from the start)

Mine had a late flourish too. It has fairly small leaves for a chinense, I wonder if that has something to do with it getting shaded out by, rather than throwing shade at, its brethren?

The leaf economics spectrum plays a pivotal role in driving soil #nitrification, #treespecies with resource-acquisitive strategies promote soil nitrification.

i just found out that botanists call the white stuff inside a pepper the "placenta" and i'm about ready to crash out

i mean, come on people, what are we even doing here

scijournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...
Capsaicin accumulation is related to nitrate content in placentas of habanero peppers (<i>Capsicum chinense</i> Jacq.)
BACKGROUND: The presence of capsaicin, the pungent principle of peppers, is restricted to the fruits of hot cultivars. This compound, which is produced in the fruits' placenta, requires 3 mol of nitr....

i unfortunately don't know the cultivar nor the scoville level of the chili, just that it's capsicum chinense and that it's the spiciest pepper I've ever had in my life. could be anything from a habanero to a bhut jolokia
