You know I hate limited run games as much as the next person with a working brain, but the "old chips" shit is a stupid argument to make

They don't make GBA era chips anymore and chipfab is expensive
They could use flashcarts but everyone would be complaining about that too

That’s not even factoring in you have to train and then pay American employees who expect 30-40% more money.

This is my favorite confidently incorrect take today from someone who clearly knows dick about chipfab.

Domestic chipfab was a goal of the Biden admin and is a goal of the Trump admin. Phones, sure. Missile guidance systems, absolutely. Every appliance with a chip in it, you see where this is going.

AI is another stated goal of the current admin. This requires GPUs, GPUs need semiconductors.

The pause of the #STMicroelectronics – #GlobalFoundries megafab in #Crolles exposes a core weakness in Europe’s #semiconductor policy: Once money is locked in, it can’t move with the market.

my team has an in-group joke about this called "The Silicon Standard", which, paraphrased: Look, we cannot afford our own chipfab, and even if we could, we cannot also mine our own silicon. Everyone's idea of where to draw the line is different, but at some point you gotta pull something in.

first followup.

one of my team isn't a programmer but mechanical engineer, and another wrote his own vector library in C from scratch. the group chat routinely half-jokes about how we should do our own chipfab.

the problem? we don't have half a billion to do it. XD
and even in your case, you DO have dependencies unless you're hiding a chipfab up your sleeve. and you make your own food on a plot of land, and you pollinate it yourself. and you make your own oxygen.

...hm. as the child of two dairy farming lines, i take a really broad view of "dependencies".

Good luck setting up a chipfab on the moon
Elon Musk told employees at xAI, his artificial intelligence company, on Tuesday that the company needed a factory on the moon to build A.I. satellites and a massive catapult to launch them into space.

The massive capital you speak of has a lot to do with the politiking of the certification red tape. On a purely technical level, GMP is achievable with a lot less than you think. You are operating on the assumption that costs are merely due to difficulty. Again, not 2nm EUV chipfab ($350M machine).

On the day that TSMC let it be known that the chipfab (for Nvidia and Apple, mostly) is cranking out 4nm silicon in Arizona, we're still stuck roughly here as far as "meaningful use cases for 4nm silicon" go.
