Shinjuku Alley , Tokyo, Japan. Photography by Theodore Lee on Flickr.
Framed overhead by a lush canopy of faux crimson maple leaves (momiji), the narrow pedestrian corridor of Shinjuku’s Omoide Yokocho (“Memory Lane”) glows under the warm amber light of paper lanterns (chōchin) and retro illuminated signboards (kanban). On either side, tiny izakaya and yakitori stalls display menu boards and daily offerings, while patrons wander down the tight asphalt path between weathered timber facades. The scene evokes a rich sensory atmosphere: the intoxicating aroma of charcoal-grilled skewers (sumibi-yaki) and rich dashi broth wafting into the evening air, the gentle clink of beer glasses and hushed chatter within counter-seated stalls, the cool touch of autumn air, and the cozy warmth radiated by glowing paper lamps along the passageway. Originating as a bustling black market (yami-ichi) in the immediate post-World War II period, Omoide Yokocho preserves the intimate, nostalgic scale of mid-century Tokyo amid the surrounding metropolis of towering skyscrapers. The alley represents a masterclass in micro-architecture and spatial efficiency (kyōsho), where micro-bars seating only six to eight guests thrive side-by-side. The seasonal hanging of autumn foliage reflects kisetsukan—the deep-seated Japanese appreciation for seasonal transitions—bringing the poetry of nature into dense urban nightlife. Every hand-painted wooden sign, paper lantern, and compact kitchen layout demonstrates a urban form of monozukuri (artisanal care and ingenuity), maintaining an enduring haven of traditional street-food culture and neighborhood camaraderie.

Sensō-ji, Tokyo’s oldest temple complex (founded in 628 CE), stands as a cornerstone of Japanese Buddhist heritage and Edo-period urban culture. These iconic giant lanterns are historically offered as votive donations (hōnō) by merchant associations and neighborhood guilds
Shot from a dramatic low angle, the photograph captures the monumental red paper lantern (chōchin) suspended beneath the soaring wooden eaves of Sensō-ji in Tokyo's historic Asakusa district. Stretched tight over ribbed bamboo, the lantern's vibrant vermilion paper is emblazoned with bold black calligraphic kanji and anchored by an ornate, gilded brass collar (fuchigane) with relief carvings. Beside it hangs a dark bronze lantern featuring filigree detailing, while above, a coffered ceiling (gōtenjō) and a complex matrix of brilliant red bracketing (masugumi) and support beams rise in rhythmic, geometric precision. The image evokes an immersive sensory atmosphere: the heady scent of burning incense (senkō) floating up from the main courtyard, the cool shade beneath the gate's cavernous roof, the faint resonance of timber under ambient city sounds, and the awe-inspiring scale of sacred architecture. Sensō-ji, Tokyo’s oldest temple complex (founded in 628 CE), stands as a cornerstone of Japanese Buddhist heritage and Edo-period urban culture. These iconic giant lanterns, hung at landmark entry gates like the Kaminarimon and Hōzōmon, are historically offered as votive donations (hōnō) by merchant associations and neighborhood guilds, representing a bridge between civic piety and artistic patronage. Every component of the structure highlights traditional monozukuri (artisanal mastery)—from the specialized washi papercrafting and brushwork of the lantern makers to the nail-less timber joinery of master shrine-and-temple carpenters (miya-daiku), whose interlocking bracket systems allow massive wooden structures to withstand centuries of seismic activity.

Steps leading to a temple in Noboriro, Japan.
Ascending into the atmospheric stillness of the night, a grand covered stone stairway (Noborirō) climbs steeply beneath a rhythmic timber arcade. Lined along every stone step, small square paper lanterns cast a soft, candlelight glow across the weathered flags, while iconic oval paper lanterns (chōchin) hang suspended from the heavy wooden ceiling beams above. The warm, amber radiance filters through white washi paper, carving an illuminated path through the surrounding darkness. The stark contrast between the coarse, unpainted timber posts, the smooth stone steps, and the gentle, flickering halos of light creates a deeply tactile sensory atmosphere: the cool night air of the mountain, the faint aroma of incense drifting from above, and the hushed, reverent stillness of a sacred ascent. Located at Hase-dera in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture, this famous 399-step covered corridor—known as the Noborirō (登廊)—was originally erected in 1039 by Chinen, a priest of Kasuga Taisha Shrine, in gratitude for a miraculous healing. Functioning as the primary pilgrimage approach from the Niomon Gate to the temple's National Treasure Main Hall (Hondō), the stairway features three distinct sections hung with unique oval "Hase-style" lanterns. During special evening illuminations such as the annual Kannon Mantōe (Ten Thousand Lantern Ceremony), hundreds of lanterns are lit to guide pilgrims toward the temple's 10-meter gilded Eleven-Faced Kannon statue.

19th century woodblock print [and details] by Hiroshige Utagawa “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, Scenery of Monkey Waka Town”. “The place is Saruwakacho. It is located in Asakusa 6-chome, Taito-ku, Tokyo, northeast of Sensoji Temple. “ Text and images via Ota Museum.
Titled Saruwakachō yoru no kei ("Night View of Saruwakachō"), the print captures the famous entertainment district in Asakusa under a deep Prussian blue sky (bero-ai). Along both sides of the street stand the grand wooden facades of Edo’s licensed Kabuki theaters, punctuated by the distinctive lookout towers (yagura) perched atop their roofs. Strolling along the broad thoroughfare, figures carrying paper lanterns (chōchin) and clad in head-cloths (zukin) cast crisp, elongated shadows onto the pale earth—a groundbreaking visual effect in traditional ukiyo-e. The creation of Saruwakachō—located in present-day Taitō Ward, northeast of Sensō-ji Temple—was born from the strict puritanical decrees of the Tenpō Reforms (1841–1843). Seeking to curb moral indulgence and mitigate fire hazards in the city center, the Tokugawa shogunate forcibly relocated Edo’s three officially licensed Kabuki troupes (Edo Sanza: the Nakamura-za, Ichimura-za, and Morita-za) to this dedicated northern enclave, named in honor of the theater founder Saruwaka Kanzaburō. Rather than dimming the city’s passion for the stage, Saruwakachō flourished into a self-contained world of fantasy, lined with theatrical teahouses (shibai-chaya) and merchant stalls that hummed with life long after the final curtain fell. Aesthetically, the print is a tranquil meditation on yūgen—that subtle, mysterious grace that descends when a realm usually defined by noise, spectacle, and heightened emotion falls silent. Hiroshige’s inclusion of cast shadows, an innovation influenced by European perspective and light studies, imparts a dreamlike, suspended stillness to the urban landscape.
