This past fall I started my Master’s in Biology @sfstatebio.bsky.social and @calacademy.bsky.social!

My project aims to generate a molecular phylogeny for the chromodorid genus Verconia to investigate color pattern evolution and assess the presence of undetected cryptic and pseudocryptic species

19. The only nudibranch in socal that's more absurdly colored than the California blue: MacFarland's chromodorid, Felimida macfarlandi. 🦑🦀

17. OK, I made it back out earlier this week and found this dazzling California blue chromodorid, Felimare californiensis - one of my favorite nudibranchs (sea slugs). 🦀🦑 #tidepooling

#worldwildlifeday A couple of days ago I tried flipping rocks while #tidepooling... and found my favorite #socal nudibranch (sea slug), MacFarland's chromodorid (Felimida macfarlandi). 🦑🦀

This one is technically not even a nudibranch, but an opisthobranch! It's quite beautiful, but pales in comparison to some of our actual nudibranchs. We happen to have some of the most beautiful nudibranchs in the world along our coast, like these:

Pholad siphons can be very well camouflaged! Here is one I found while taking photos of a California blue chromodorid sea slug. This clam is a scale-sided piddock, Parapholas californica. You would never know there was an entire clam in the rock underneath this doodad. 🦀🦑 #socal #tidepooling

Another chromodorid nudibranch (sea slug) from the southern California coast - a California blue, Felimare californiensis! Incredible colors! Much more common than the purple MacFarland's, and larger, but ecologically similar as a sponge predator (e.g. 1st pic). 🦀🦑 #tidepooling 📸OlympusTG6

Happy to keep providing much needed timeline cleanses: yesterday I saw a slug that I've been looking for for a year, one of nature's miracles: MacFarland's chromodorid, a vivid purple nudibranch! Absolutely stunning. 😍 Eats sponges. #socal. 📸Olympus TG6. #tidepooling 🦑🦀

You might think the bright pink of Verconia verconis, our #Nudivember species today, would make them stand out, but they perfectly match the color of the sponge they feed on, complete with the shape of their body and even the texture.

2/3 three and a half inches. Although it has been found up and down the California coast, the California Chromodorid went extinct in Northern California in the mid-1980s. However, thankfully this resilient sea slug has been popping up all along the coast since

1/3 The California Chromodorid is a vibrant species of sea slug. Also known as a kind of nudibranch, the California Chromodorid can be found in the Pacific Ocean all along the California coast, as its name suggests. It eats mostly various species of sea sponges and only grows to a length of about
