A mini 'beast' of the leaf litter the pseudoscorpion Chthonius ischnocheles. This tiny arachnid is just a few millimetres long. It uses its venomous 'pincer palps' to immobilise prey such as mites then covers them with digestive fluid and injests the liquefied remains. They are harmless to humans!

Acanthinula aculeata, Prickly Snail, from Colstey Wood in the Shropshire hills with the wildlife group as well as the pseudoscorpion Chthonius ischnocheles. Upland conifer wood with broadleaves and wet areas. Crossbills too but no Willow Tit this time. #ukwildlife #molluscalert #pseudscorner etc

We finally found a pseudoscorpion which wasn't Neobisium carcinoides on Wednesday, though it was only the 2nd commonest species instead - the stupendously named Chthonius ischnocheles!

A little montage of the eight species of pseudoscorpion I have managed to find in Norfolk this year. IDs in ALT text. I have turned over a lot of stones and sieved rather a lot of leaf litter not to mention muck heaps...

I took these photos of a Green Elf Cup Fungi (Chlorociboria aeruginascens), it was only when putting them on the PC. I noticed this tiny Chthonius ischnocheles, the first I've ever seen around 1.5-2.5mm 😬

I finally got a new laptop at the weekend. All fine until I realised that I would have to install QGIS again...
Behold, after much faffing I have managed to get the latest version, add the county boundaries and even make a map! Now I need a lie down!

Chthonius ischnocheles: a shiny, dark brownish pseudoscorpion with pale reddish pincers held out to either side on a pale greyish rock which has dark blotches on it. Chthonius ischnocheles: a shiny, dark brownish pseudoscorpion with pale reddish pincers pulled defensively back to either side. This one is tucked between some particles of soil that are stuck to the old brick that the pseudoscorpion was on the underside of when I turned it over. Chthonius tetrachelatus: a rather pale brownish species sitting on a piece of old roof tile. It is facing right with its pincers held open. It is in bright sunlight and is casting a dark shadow behind it. Chthonius tetrachelatus: a rather pale brownish species sitting on a piece of old roof tile. It has its claws pulled back in a defensive looking posture.

A shiny, dark reddish brown pseudoscorpion tucked in amongst some bits of old damp straw. The chephalothorax is very dark brown and it has very large chelicerae. A shiny, pale yellowish-brown pseudoscorpion with very pale pinkish claws on a white background. Two rather dull, brown, granular looking pseudoscorpions with dull, reddish brown claws in amongst some bits of old damp straw. In each one, the abdomen has a clear pale line down the centre where the tergites are divided. A very pale, yellowish pseudoscorpion with reddish claws that look quite shiny. This one is an immature specimen, known as a tritonymph.

Just back from what turned out to be a Chthonid Odyssey, cycling round Suffolk/Essex, visiting lots of churchyards looking for invertebrates. Managed to find at least 1 pseudoscorpion on 8 consecutive days, total 16 individuals of 2 species (Chthonius ischnocheles and C. tetrachelatus).

The church at Belchamp Otten in Essex, bathed in warm sunshine. The church has a short, square tower covered in render and a red pan tile roof. The walls are mad of flint with red brick on some of the buttresses and bits of the wall (looks like a later repair job). A rather pale pseudoscorpion, Chthonius tetrachelatus, on the underside of an old roof tile.

@vannabartlett.bsky.social starting to attempt non-diptera sent in samples, not the best condition, I think i can see six holes where setae were on rear edge of cephalathorax, tergites are not split, Chthonius orthodactylus? Maybe should have started with a pristine specimen 🙂 Any help appreciated!
