Yes I hadn’t thought of that, was coming from a purely anglophone POV but the Chunnel goes both ways…

Pretty sure there’s still a Chunnel Cafe near Waterloo station (despite the absence of a Chunnel connection now)

I remember Chunnel being a thing for a while in the early days. Maybe the operators twisted media arms to drop it in favour of the official name because they didn't like the sound of it?

Also, saying "Channel Tunnel" out loud is kind of satisfying

I’ve said it before but, linguistically, how come Brexit took off but Chunnel didn’t???

Also the important aspect of this is about Lorries using the Channel Tunnel, not as much individuals. As we saw with Brexit a ton of trade is via Lorries through the Chunnel. Removing those barriers means trade flows significantly faster because of the Free Movement of Goods.

did not know they built that much stretch into the Chunnel

Abolish the UK. Scotland, Wales, NI and London become independent, join the EU. "Chunnel 2" connects London to Scotland. Texas ceded as joint territory of Mexico and Spain, joins the EU. Self ID M/F/X for all government docs. OTC HRT. Abolish SpaceX. Both Wachowskis get work. Legalize ADHD
honestly?
quote this with your maximalist approach to trans rights

Trans people should have right of first refusal for every punishment given to the perpetrators; WE get to set the floor.

I want the right of recompense. The families who erased their trans children should themselves be erased.
One of the more insidious phrasings I've seen with the Dems/trans rights discourse lately is the idea that trans people are being greedy and demanding a "maximalist" approach to trans rights.

No, you cannot call the state of rights American trans people had as recently as 2023 "maximalist," sorry.

It was, however, being reposted as “If you can’t support MY voting issues, why should I support yours?”

The self-absorbed tunnel-vision being expressed would put the Chunnel to shame.

The ultimate trip would be Chunnel from Brussels/Paris to London, I want to do that at least once in my life, just have to ignore the cost thing (getting to Paris or Brussels by plane would cost me the same of taking a direct flight to London, on top of that you'd have to add the Eurostar ticket)

At the risk of sounding like a fast show character, isn't the Chunnel and Eurostar brilliant?

odd thought the british call it the "chunnel" because that's just how they say the word "tunnel" (in the same way they sometimes say "chewsday" instead of "tuesday") and had never heard the term "channel tunnel" before today

I've taken the Chunnel train from London to Lille. Quick and convenient.
I'm not sure about a train from Phoenix to London.

I googled "Chunnel" and the wikipedia article was the first link that appeared.

We need a chunnel.
France is our third-closest neighbour (leaving aside our land grant in Vimy).
September 20, 2026 at 5:53 PM
Don't they call it the chunnel anymore?
September 20, 2026 at 5:52 PM
Did you graduate pre chunnel?

I did that on a hovercraft when I was a kid. Now THAT was cool.

My wife was scared of the Chunnel too, but in the end it was a lot quicker than she expected, and she quite enjoyed it.

Thats cool, but I saw a sailboat ferry that does the Dover-Calais route and that looks cooler!

Also the Chunnel kind of scares me.

One more: on Masterpiece: The Tunnel, the British version of The Bridge, 3 seasons of danger to the Chunnel, starring Clemence Poesy and Stephen Dillane (brother of Richard aka Captain Raines). It’s brilliant but a difficult watch.

He wanted to walk through the Chunnel, but they wouldn’t let him. But apparently he’s going to swim across the British Channel on October 1.
