Morris resigned as senior pastor of Gateway Church in Southlake last year after admitting “inappropriate sexual behavior” in the 1980s.

Republican Mike Rogers, a candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan's November 3 midterm elections, faced questions about his campaign's continued association with a pastor linked to a notorious church sex abuse case. During a press event in Saginaw, Rogers was pressed by reporters regarding his Faith Leadership Coalition, which includes two pastors connected to the Living Word Church network. Three members of the Midland-area church are currently serving prison sentences after being convicted of sexually abusing children. One coalition member, Brian Ford of Living Word Church in Ludington, attended the Midland trial in support of former pastor James Randolph, who was convicted. Ford remains on Rogers' faith team. Rogers deflected questions about Ford's continued involvement, instead shifting focus to attack his Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, by referencing left-wing streamer Hasan Piker. Rogers claimed Piker 'preached that we deserved 9/11,' though this was a misrepresentation of Piker's actual statements. Rogers also stated that one coalition member had stepped away from volunteer work, while another remained involved, but failed to confirm Ford's current role. The endorsement from Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel, a registered Democrat, drew criticism from local Democrats, who dismissed Federspiel as 'a Democrat in name' with a history of endorsing losing candidates. Federspiel defended his support, emphasizing his focus on Rogers' policies rather than party loyalty. The incident highlights ongoing scrutiny of Rogers' campaign connections to individuals tied to a serious criminal case, raising questions about the appropriateness of such associations in a political campaign.
