Money in the seed bank: Mexico is home to one of the world’s most significant agricultural research centers and the largest gene bank for maize and wheat, the Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maíz y Trigo (CIMMYT) in Texcoco. The CIMMYT has 1,300 employees with projects in over 40 countries.

밀은 또 이야기가 더 웃긴데, 한국에서 밀농사가 재미없어서 사실상 도태가 된건 굉장히 오래된 일인데 정작 현재 상업밀의 상당수는 한국밀 유전자가 없으면 성립이 안됨. 1970년대 드워프 유전자가 한국 앉은뱅이 밀에서 기원해서 상업밀의 생산성을 거의 두배 가까이 끌어올렸는데, 정작 한국에서 앉은뱅이 밀은 명맥이 끊겼었음. 저 유전자를 상업밀에 이식하게 한것도 국제기구인 CIMMYT.
