The 'Cirrhopetalum alliance' sounds threatening, but it's just a monophyletic group of orchids! Here, the floral morphology, scent, anatomy & VOCs of Bulbophyllum species are analysed to consider #Evolutionary adaptations in the alliance 👇🧪🌍🌿

Bulbophyllum carunculatum is properly stinky, like a bulbophyllum should be, not like those wishy-washy cirrhopetalum types that smell faintly of mushrooms. This one is presumably pollinated by flies that enjoy the strong smell of cat pee. 🌴🌱 #orchids
An orchid with mid-size flowers. The sepals and petals are yellow. The long, warty labellum is partially hidden behind the sepals. It is a reddish brown so dark it is almost black.

Most of the species that were formerly in Cirrhopetalum smell vaguely like mushrooms, which isn’t too bad.

Bulbophyllum wendlandianum
@RJBOTANICO @JovenesBotanica #botany #plants
