I worked for a few hours yesterday and finished up flicking open the lock of this Romney wool. Stay tuned for a picture of the finished work so far.

A beige lock of Romney wool. It long and would you look at that crimp! (crimp is the waviness of the fiber) A lock of wool as is came off the sheep (bottom) you can see 3 colors. White-ish at the right) this is the public face of the wool. Muddy brown this is where most of the dirt and chaff ends up (middle of the lock). A beige color (left), this is the wool closest to the sheep’s body. It’s colored with just a the lanolin the sheep produces. On top you see a lock the has been flicked open. This get a lot of dirt, chaff, and other stuff out of the fiber out before washing. Flicking open the lock lets the wash water get all around the individual wool fibers. This is the chaff that ends up on the floor as you flick open the locks. I prefer to do this kind of this outside but it’s just not warm enough in my part of New Jersey yet. This is the waste fiber that get caught in the flick card as your working along with just a few locks that weren’t worth the effort to open up.
