These photos are from June 2025. I grew these from seeds which were meant to be Cleistocactus sp. 40cm. I assume 40cm is how tall it grows. The smaller seedling wasn't doing well so I decided to put them in separate pots.

🪷🍍The garden does not include many local plants from the Canary Islands, but it does feature some species that have been planted there, either for crops (bananas, pineapples) or for decoration (like Strelitzia flowers or banyan trees). Here a selection of plants from the garden

Cleistocactus winteri o cactus “cola de mono”. Se han puesto a echar flores como locos

Cleistocactus means ‘closed cactus,’ named for the long, tubular flowers common in the genus. Cleistocactus winteri puts on quite the show when those blooms finally open. 🌵🧡 #BloomScrolling
Close-up of an orange flower on Cleistocactus winteri (formerly Hildewintera aureispina). The flower emerges from a stem covered in golden spines, a feature reflected in its former species name, aureispina, meaning “golden-spined.” Like many species in the genus, its long tubular flowers are adapted for hummingbird pollination.

Monkey's Tail Cactus (Cleistocactus colademononis) flowering #MacroMonday could I squeeze in #ColorADay #PinkMon
Close-up of a Monkey's Tail Cactus (Cleistocactus colademononis) cascading from a terracotta pot. Its long, trailing stems are densely covered in silky, white hair-like spines, creating a soft, furry appearance. Several vivid red, tubular flower buds emerge from the hanging stems, poised to bloom. Succulent plants with rounded green leaves and pale rosette-shaped succulents fill the base of the arrangement, adding contrasting textures and colours to the composition.

Scarlet Cleistocactus or Firecracker Cactus - flowers usually face the direction of maximum sun exposure. Originally from S. America where they've developed a symbiotic relationship with hummingbirds. #plants #flowers #ecology #nature #photo
Cleistocactus baumannii is a desert plant native to South America, known for its long, slender, sprawling branches. The "Closed" Flower: The genus name Cleistocactus comes from the Greek word kleistos, meaning "closed," because the tubular flowers remain mostly shut, opening only at the very tip. Hummingbird Design: This structural shape is a textbook example of evolutionary adaptation. The bright red color is highly visible to birds but ignored by most insects. The narrow, deep tube holds a rich reservoir of nectar at its base, perfectly matching the long, slender beak and tongue of a hovering hummingbird, which acts as the plant's primary pollinator.

Yes they clump with multi stems. I would plan for 36” wide for long term, or you could prune and keep fewer stems. Here is what mine looks like after 5 years and it will eventually at least double in size.

A few of my favorite cactus photos of 2025. It was fun seeing them mature and show their potential. 🌸🌵

This little gymnocalycium cactus continued its incredible flower production. By far the most blooms of any of our many cacti. This four year old echinopsis torch cactus really put on a show this year after three years in the rock garden. A Stenocactus multicostatus (brain cactus) with its first flowers this year. This "silver torch" cactus (Cleistocactus strausii) with its first pups this year was very exciting for me.

SILVER TORCH CACTUS 🌵 Native to the high mountain regions of Bolivia and Argentina, it thrives in well-drained soils and prefers strong, full sunlight. When mature, it produces deep red or burgundy, tubular flowers that protrude horizontally from the stems, typically in spring and summer.
