... and talking of moths on an amazing run here, up popped another Vestal this weekend. We've had so many TG04 records this summer/autumn. And every one has been different. This one a little faded but the lemon & raspberry remains...

I've always loved a double (L-) album! The amazing run for this brilliant Wainscot in 2026 continues a pace ~ amazing that we only had our 1st L-album Wainscot last year & this autumn has produced at least eight in recent weeks.

Three more of the Dusky-lemon Sallow from the weekend. This smart & understated moth reminds me of the upperpart colour scheme of a particularly well-marked, darker looking (dark-breasted) Barn Owl: such a neat & distinctive look 👌

Absolutely the star of the mothing show over the weekend was this NFG a pristine Dusky-lemon Sallow. Records in TG04 are thin on the ground but this one coincided with another in the village the same night. Quite a localised moth countywide too.

Breezy & clear again overnight, but a gorgeously granite-like Large Ranunculus was a star NFY moth. Not far behind was the 2nd Autumnal Rustic of the year ~ another real favourite moth of mine, so elegant & subtle in appearance.

Some super moths this morning after a breezy, clear night. Always enjoy a Scarce Bordered Straw & to find another Vestal, in a stellar autumn for them, was quite something. Clancy's Rustic (one of two) & a NFY Brindled Green rounded things off.

Two NFYs for us this morning, one of which, Orange Sallow, was only our 2nd ever garden record (after the first in 2023). Also today, the first Lunar Underwing of 2026 ~ a much commoner species here but one that's always welcome.

Another autumn favourite here is the Frosted Orange. They never, ever disappoint, always so smart, and with one of the best names out there ~ sounding full-on like a popular popsicle from the 50's...(probably...!).

The very first moth in to the Actinic last night, before night-fall, was this Dark Sword-grass - there's always a buzz when we get one of these popular migrant species. Every moth's darts are different, this one's were rather modest.

It's that time...
One of autumn's signature moths, the Black Rustic, brought its sombre & intense darkness to the MV this morning. Super fresh too in a striking purple-black, darkest of dark shrouds, with gold-leaf embellishments.

Autumn's reach has begun to show itself in our moths this weekend: Brick & Barred Sallow amongst the seasonal visitors to the garden, along with only our 2nd-ever Pearly Underwing plus a Clancy's Rustic, still a very scare species here.

Our stellar late summer & early autumn for the migrant Vestal continued with this gorgeous raspberry & lemon individual this morning. What a brilliant run we've had locally, both here at CMO HQ & in our local grassy margins.

A rather nice looking Archips podana (Large Fruit-tree Tortrix) from the weekend. A wonderfully variable, rather chunky micro that's commonly found around much of the county. Rather nice checkered pattern on this one.

It was only a few days ago I posted our L-album Wainscot double ~ now we have the treble! A remarkable run for this rather snazzy Wainscot species that we'd only ever had two of until last week & now we've had three in nine days.

We had a bit of Knot-horn action this morning too ~ one of the brightest Rhubarb & Custard's we've had (the Rosy Knot-horn - Oncocera semirubella) & also a very smart looking Saltmarsh Knot-horn (the scarce Ancylosis oblitella).

238/53 recorded last night on a very solid CMO start to the new month. A small, silver-ish Silver Y, a remarkable 3rd L-album Wainscot in a week, a 1st Scarce Bordered Straw for the year & also a Dark Spectacle (not a frequent moth here at all).

Until this weekend we'd only had two L-album Wainscots (one last year & one earlier this summer) but now we've had four! Separate singles on Saturday night & last night with several differences visible on the patterning of the two individuals.

Dewick's Plusia is such a pleasing name, it simply rolls off the tongue beautifully.
Dewick's Plusia.

We've had confirmation of 2 rare micro NFGs from recent weeks.

Pammene spiniana (Blackthorn Flower Moth) & Epiblema sticticana (Colt's-foot Root-borer). Both new for TG04.

Another quiet night at CMO HQ. Enjoyed the rather gaudy Phyllonorycter geniculella (the Sycamore Leaf-miner) ~ all golden zig-zag "corporal" stripes & eye-liner borders + a black full stop. Smart.

After a night where the temperature dropped below 10°C for the first time in ages, the moth numbers were on the low side. This rather dandy Pale Eggar was definitely the pick of the bunch ~ less worn than our only other record for 2026.

The Argyresthia group of micros is one of my favourites, never less than funky & generally really colourful too. This is Argyresthia albistria (Dark Blackthorn Tip Moth) & it was an NFY species on our big Cliffie day earlier this week.
