Here's an #InverteFest phenomenon where I genuinely don't know why it's like this.

Many hermit crabs have this morphotype l call "stars in their eyes" with some light colored ommatidia scattered around a dark eye. What's up with that? Evolution of maximum cuteness? 😍🤩

I’ve seen lots of Coenobita land hermit crabs here in #Okinawa, but this time it’s a different one! Saw this ribbed hermit crab (Clibanarius striolatus) in a little pool when tide was low. #HermitCrab #crustacean

When I was swimming in the Bahamas, I noticed an interesting heap of shells beneath me, so I did my best to gently scoop them up with my foot and it was a big pile of these! They sprung to life on my hand and scuttled about ❤️

#crustmas day 17! This thinstrip hermit crab (Clibanarius vittatus) is doing their best to get in the Christmas spirit. They can't grow a beard like Santa does, so maybe these bubbles will do?
A thinstripe hermit crab (Clibanarius vittatus), olive green with tannish yellow stripes down its limbs, hangs out of its shell (maybe pear whelk?). This guy is absolutely covered in foamy bubbles, looking like a Santa "beard" of sorts.

Even more interesting, I think they are 2 different species. Bottom is Calcinus laevimanus, the top 2 are perhaps Clibanarius zebra.

There are other sessile hermits that live together like this and filter feed, but not usually in these species
