Chicago has been ranked the most climate-resilient city in the world.

No other U.S. cities made the list of the top 20 most resilient locations.

Here’s the role that personal choice plays in climate: a lot of the things you can do for personal choice that are in some vague sense of the phrase good for climate are also good for preparing you to be climate adapted.

Today I was delayed getting to New York from Boston to do an interview about climate change because we haven’t adapted our transportation systems to climate change.

A new report ranks the world’s large cities on how well they have adapted to face climate risk. Chicago, which has invested heavily in infrastructure meant to mitigate flooding and water pollution, is first on the list.

I'm a researcher primarily in adaptation. We are not even adapted to where the climate is today.

If you think you can seawall your way through a 4°C planet, you are straight up dreaming.

Mitigation AND adaptation, or you end up with way more of option 3 for dealing with climate change: suffering.
I’m am adaptation scientist and here’s what I had to say about this—many years ago already.

“At 3C of global heating, climate damage cannot be insured against, covered by governments, or adapted to. That means no more mortgages or new real estate devt, no long-term investment, no financial stability. The financial sector as we know it ceases to function and capitalism ceases to be viable.”

Large protected areas could provide an important buffer against climate-driven declines among cold-adapted birds in Northern Europe, according to research based on more than four decades of bird monitoring in Finland:
Large Finnish reserves help shield cold-adapted birds from climate change
Cold-adapted birds declined in smaller protected areas in northern Finland but remained more stable in larger reserves, according to a new study.

I gave out milkweed seeds last Halloween (yes I gave out other treats, I'm not a monster) to help provide monarch habitat.

Plant native plants! They grow really well and are very beautiful and are adapted for your climate so they need less work.

Tipping Point from the Stable Climate at ~280 ppm CO₂ (Holocene, during past 10,000 years) to a Stable Hothouse Climate at 560 ppm CO₂.

We are already at 560 ppm CO₂ equivalent and will likely (and pass) 560 ppm CO₂ later this century.

Re-posting adapted version of 2023 thread originally posed elsewhere because, in this moment especially, the need for independent domain experts (in weather, climate, & beyond) to be supported in offering balanced, nuanced,& contextually accurate information to mass audiences has never been greater.

Apparently there are people - genuine, intelligent people - who think climate policy is trying to maintain CO2 and temperature at 'arbitrary baselines'

The precise conditions to which all of human civilisation and its infratructure are adapted are... arbitrary?

I raise this point frequently - we're not even well-adapted to the weather and climate extremes we already experience ('adaptation deficit', a la Burton 2009). Addressing that would go a meaningful way toward reducing total vulnerability to future climate changes www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Species are currently adapted to the relatively cool conditions that have dominated over the past few million years. And we see in the paleoclimate record, rapid climate change has, in the past, been associated with mass extinction events.
