A previously unseen (to me!) photograph of the Cochno Stone from the Mann - Applebey collection held by HES in Edinburgh. Date and subjects unknown, but it post-dates Ludovic Mann’s paint job in 1937.

A photo of our trip to see the Cochno Stone near Faifley when it was uncovered for a few days after 50 years of being hidden.

Yikes @urbanprehistorian.bsky.social - I thought that was a bit of the Cochno Stone for a moment! But Somerset is a long way from Glasgow!
When is a tomb not a tomb? When the farmer was allowed to plough it away....this slab was once part of a stone-lined chamber (cist) covered by a round barrow at Pool Farm, W. Harptree, Somerset. #TombTuesday - Read more about the slab here: www.bbc.co.uk/bristol/cont...

the Cochno Stone.

“The stone was buried by the heritage authorities in 1965 due to damage caused by visitors but was briefly uncovered in 2016, which revived interest in the other rock-art sites in the area.”

The Cochno Stone

“In 1937, archaeologist Ludovic Mann painted the rock-art panel in bright coloured oil-paints. He believed prehistoric people carved symbols on the rock to show how they predicted eclipses and so defeated the monster that ate the sun.” University of Glasgow

Antonine Wall remains below Golden Hill: Five proposed Battery Energy Storage Sites near Clydebank, one right along the path of the Antonine Wall. This is along with the huge site just off Cochno Road, Whitehill close to the rock art there. Archaeology at risk.

I saw some really fantastic previously never before seen (by me) Cochno Stone material in the Ludovic Mann collection at HES today. Including this amazing short 1937 text referring to the painting (brown paint!) and potential future presentation of this rock art site. #TheManntheMyth

Cochno BESS site is gonna go ahead. I’m not anti Battery Storage projects btw, just very against this one. Its plans encompass a Neolithic cup and ring marked stone. And while it may not be the 36ft, 5000yr old Cochno Stone, it is still Scotland’s ancient art being sacrificed in the name of progress

"The place that you live has been special for thousands of years" - Kenny Brophy's amazing Cochno Stone project, where years of amazing community work is culminating in a new primary school being designed inspired by the nearby rock art. Prehistory is a living thing!

Cochno Stone material from a 1937 text sounds like an excellent archive find. Those old notes can make a place feel newly alive.
