"Write clean code. You'll thank yourself later."

So I tested it. 70 startup codebases. 146 funding rounds.

Messy code + fast shipping = 60.6% funded.
Cleanest codebases = 44.4%.

Speed beat perfection - at least when capital was cheap.

I Analyzed 70 Startups' Codebases — The Ones With More Technical Debt Raised More Money
An empirical study of 70 VC-backed companies reveals that technical debt doesn't slow startups down, and the 'move fast and break things' crowd was right all along — at least during the ZIRP era.

the trick is no one in their right mind wants to replace any existing COBOL codebases, least of all with anything written by an AI.

im afraid that it is very funny to me to be precious about ai-tainted code in indie games, a field of endeavour famously known for shipping superfund codebases

I miss functional programming. It is exhausting updating side effecting codebases.

Credo 1.7.15 is out now, with massive perf improvements for large #ElixirLang codebases.
Got a few PRs in flight for Credo which cumulatively dropped the runtime from ~33 seconds down to ~9 on our 3500 file #ElixirLang codebase at work. 😁

📚 Obscure #Minecraft Fact 📚

At one point, there were 3 codebases (Console, Java, Pocket/Bedrock) & all of them had different implementations of redstone. 😂

I was the keeper of the spreadsheet that tracked parity differences across the codebases. It took me ~2 weeks to write & verify.

I assume that the existing codebases and databases are in off-site backups, which is why we need to save the off-site backups.

A quarter of Y-Combinator’s W25 startup batch have 95% of their codebases generated by AI. The interesting question is what their codebases and products look like a year from now.

Writing new code is easy. Maintaining and evolving it is the hard part.

With the release of new AI models that are better at coding, developers are increasingly using AI to generate code. One of the newest examples is the

genAI is pretty good at writing emails, but kinda bad at writing, say, entire stories. it's pretty good at writing short code snippets, but kinda bad at handling larger, complex codebases.

i think it pretty much works the same way for art, too

not to defend AI (which does make this problem worse) but there were many codebases where this was true before AI happened
the nastiest thing about ai code bases is no human has expertise in that code base. nobody can maintain it except more ai. insane thing to lock yourself into.
