I also really enjoy cryptography/codebreaking, so if there was a role for that in the heist?

On Nov 5, 1941, Tokyo set a late Nov deadline for US talks while finalizing war plans if diplomacy failed. The US rejected terms due to Japan's Tripartite Pact and refusal to exit China. US 'MAGIC' codebreaking intercepted these messages, proving war was imminent before Pearl Harbor.

I'm working on a new earring prototype for my store, AtomAndAster.Etsy.com. Can you decode these? Hint: it's in 7-bit #ASCII. Another hint: The gold pair is read across and the silver pair is read down. Want to guess what they say? #SciArt #HandmadeJewelry #Binary #STEM #codebreaking #SmallBusiness

Glibly, but not trivially, something that computes. E.g., the Bletchley Park codebreaking computer, Colossus, did not have a separation of software and hardware and it computed.

New petition: Mandate vital computing history and WWII cryptology in the National Curriculum
We call on the Department for Education to mandate the teaching of the foundational ideas and historical developments of modern computing, as well as the overlooked intellectual warfare of WWII cryptology and codebreaking. Pupils deserve an explanation of the why behind the how of their learning.

For #LGBTQHistoryMonth, remembering Alan Turing. His WWII codebreaking at Bletchley Park cracked Enigma, shortening the war and saving millions. He also laid the foundations of theoretical computer science and AI, conceiving both the Turing Machine and the Turing Test.

The Enigma machine could scramble a message billions of different ways. Turing's Bombe did not guess the answer — it eliminated every setting that could not possibly be right.

Al-Kindi, Baghdad, about 801 to 873 CE.

Around 850 CE he wrote the earliest known description of frequency analysis, the method for breaking ciphers that is still the basic tool for classical codes.

The foundations of codebreaking came from Baghdad.

Henryk Zygalski, Jerzy Różycki, and Marian Rejewski were Polish mathematicians who first broke Germany’s Enigma cipher, laying the foundations for Allied codebreaking success. Their pioneering workenabled later breakthroughs at Bletchley Park and helped shorten the war.

This Mysterious Medieval Manuscript Has Stumped Scholars for Well Over a Century. Could Its Pages Have Been Bound Out of Order This Whole Time?
A new study claims that the pages of the Voynich Manuscript, thought to be written by several different scribes in 16th-century Europe, alternate irregularly. It may change the way codebreakers approach the text

When the cipher outgrows the page and builds its own architecture in the dark. Pushed Tri-X 1600 grain and the quiet tension of 1980s analog codebreaking.

The Permutation Matrix
In a dimly lit 1980s basement office, a cryptanalyst watches punched paper tape and fanfold printouts lift from the desk, their perforations projecting a self-assembling lattice of structured light in the air. Shot on Kodak Tri-X pushed to 1600 with a 50mm f/1.4 lens, the low-key black-and-white print shows heavy silver grain, thin grey shadows, and warm foxing along the worn borders.

Turing - Turingery and Delilah
1) In July 1942, Turing developed a complex codebreaking technique he named 'Turingery'. This method fed into work by others at Bletchley in understanding the 'Lorenz' cipher machine.
