#coextinction
‼️ New preprint: By solving a paradox in graph theory, we show that specialist symbionts constrain ecosystem structure, drive biodiversity, and face high extinction risk. With @jbyoder.org and @ctrlalttim.com:

Finally, we unpack what this means for biodiversity loss. Based on some napkin math, we see a reasonable case that parasites, mutualists, and commensalists account for the majority of life on Earth; and, specialists will probably account for the majority of local and global coextinctions.

Last year, I finally figured out a graph theory problem I've been working on since 2017. I'm presenting it (and some big picture thoughts on biodiversity and coextinction) for the first time on Sunday! I am so nervous and excited. If you're at ASN, don't miss @jbyoder.org's symposium on coevolution!

Saw a great documentary tonight called, “ Coextinction.” Save the Salmon, Save the Orcas, Remove the Snake River Dams, Save Humanity - in a nutshell. Very good and very depressing. We’re ffffd.

However, this survivor has been troubled since the beginning of the 20th century by habitat destruction and invasive species, and it is considered Endangered. As the only host for the Ryukyu Rabbit Tick, if the rabbit goes extinct, the tick will go extinct too; this is known as coextinction.

What happens to the small things when the big things disappear? - Anthropocene Magazine
Sometimes, the fate of lots of small things hinge on the fate of a few very big ones. Take the story of the dung beetles and the elephant. For a long time, scientists have warned that the loss of certain “keystone” species can cause outsized disruptions in an ecosystem. At the most extreme, it can wipe out still more species, a phenomenon known as “coextinction.” While this domino effect makes sense in theory, documenting its occurrence in the wild has proven much trickier. Ecosystems are complex and hard to control, defying easy manipulation or observation. But scientists in Kenya appear to have done just that in an ambitious melding of computer modeling, on-the-ground experiments and detailed observations of the landscape. The upshot: Insect diversity can hinge on the health of a single giant herbivore species. And that in turn can influence everything from nutrient cycling to seed dispersal. It’s a lesson how shifts in diversity can fray whole ecosystems. “Our findings underscore the value of conserving elephants, not just for their own sake, but also for the biogeochemical integrity of savannas, the prosperity of pastoral and agro-ecosystems, and the cosurvival of charismatic minifauna,” the scientists wrote in a study published...
