In ancient Rome they had something called the cognomen, which was basically a hereditary nickname. Cicero, for example, was a cognomen because people thought the noses in his family looked like chickpeas. My family’s cognomen was Saccus, for our famously large and pendulous ballsacks

Today in 1016 King Edmund 'Ironside' died. My favourite British royal cognomen. Even better than 'the Lion,' 'the Great' & 'Lionheart'
He may have died from wounds sustained in battle or, according to one chronicler, was stabbed to death while on the toilet.

Fearmongels: Famous cognomen of Genghis Khan and his army.🙄🤦
Markwayne Mullin: "The Democrats throw out all these fearmongels to try to make ICE and President Trump's administration look as worse as possible" 🥴

“Et tu, Brute” works fine, since brutus as adjective, rather than cognomen, means stupid.

The two halves of Redmane the cursed gladiator, before they came to share a body (and a relationship)! Draconarius the minotaur (that's his cognomen, he has other probably-dull Roman names that I haven't come up with yet) and Gomboc the gnoll. Thanks @harewolf.bsky.social, love your work as always!

Very few of Tolkien's dwarves earn a cognomen. Some notable examples:
Durin Longbeard

and Thorin Oakenshield

and of course
Bofur DEEZNUTS

Wotan does not have the cognomen "Frenzy-stirrer" for nothing. Behold what happens when one of his chosen is attacked.

So there was a gens Asinia and Gnaeus is a common praenomen, although not one that, to my knowledge was used by the Asinii. Longus is a valid cognomen, but again, not known among the Asinii.

So it is a perfectly valid, but unlikely, Roman name.

#OnThisDay - 21 May - in AD 293, as part of the Tetrarchy, Galerius is advanced to the rank of Caesar by Diocletian and Maximian. It was at this time that Galerius assumed "Maximianus" as his cognomen. #History 🏺
