another thing I found a home for this evening was the Aristo variable contrast cold light head I had as well as the Metrolux Timer. I used coldlights at the museum and at home starting around 1991 and was a convert. this setup I had was a closed loop timer, projection sensitometer and lamps.
snap from 1995 showing an Artisto VCL4500 variable contrast cold light on an old Omega DII. to the right is the controller and power supply, above is a Metrolux timer. you can also see an Omega reduction cone to the right on baseboard. these were for making small prints. this is the full green tube--equal low contrast. you can do the same thing with a Wratten 58 filter on a regular condenser head. full blue = high contrast. the blue and green are blended together with the blue being variable intensity in the mix, to create a range of contrasts. the Ilford Multigrade 500 head works in a similar way, with magenta and yellow filters run from quartz halogen lamps. You can also use them independently for "split filter" printing where a double or more exposure is made at the high & low grades. the blue by itself is excellent with graded papers, but not that many of those are made anymore. the Metrolux is an interesting timer that uses a probe to monitor the output of the lamp, or even the sun--any light source--and it adjusts the time to keep it consistent. you can also do readings off the baseboard for negative density for exposure, resizing etc. with the footswitch you can pause in the middle of an exposure etc. the RH Designs "stop clock" is similar as are color analyzers.
