🧵 My nieces remind me why curiosity matters.

They ask questions adults have stopped asking. They look closer. They notice things that others do not see..

That sense of wonder finds its way into my art. I want my drawings to make people look twice, and wonder what else might be there. [1]

Model Session – 18-11-25 – 1

A Davy Crockett Hat This pastel drawing ‘Model Session – 18-11-25-1’ is a special one. Imagine a young man wearing a Davy Crockett hat. Such a coonskin cap to use the proper word , is a sight to see indeed. Never saw it in real life though, only in movies. Well, not in The Netherlands, that’s for sure. Our male model didn’t come from here but from Denmark but I’n not sure if it’s common over there either. Anyway, we had this young man over last year and we kept him on our list to invite him once more. He could sit perfectly still and that’s always a great quality we life model sketchers and painters admire in models. Then one of the participants asked me if could ask him to keep on this most impressive headgear. He was happy to oblige and there it was: our first pose would become a sitting one. Hairy Business At the same time my initial plan to apply my bit of cubism ran straight down the drain. With all these lush and thin hairs cubism simply wouldn’t do justice to the hat. By its very nature it was the focal point. To render all these protruding hairs spiky was not something I was looking forward to. Besides that, The hairs on the cap and his own hairdo underneath were intriguing enough. See, if I could try to capture them in a realistic way. They almost seemed to flow into each other. The rest was easy. His features I managed to capture immediately and concisely. How wonderful this blueish gray Ingres paper is. Basically, the only thing I had to focus on: the hairy structures and the highlights. The midtones were already present. Back home I elaborated the hairs a bit. Great session!

Henriëtte Sibie’s Portrait This pastel drawing ‘Model Session – 18-10-25 – 2’ shows Henriëtte Sibie’s portrait. A bit of cubism but realist as well. My first session’s pastel showed a reclined position but we like the variety of it all. Therefor we already decided in advance to have her pose in two different poses. The second one she stood right up and we had her lean on an easel comfortably. After all, she had to take this pose for one hour at one stretch. Well, leave that to Henriëtte. She’s a great professional model and she can stand perfectly still. Ideal to draw her portrait. Which was my very aim to be honest. Measuring out Proportions Not the first time I did a portrait of her beautiful features though. In fact, quite some time ago, in 2013 I painted one. After that I hired her as model a couple of times but mostly as model for students to pose. However, this time I felt this was my chance to do another portrait. My view on her from the room and the very lighting were perfect. First, measuring out proportions wich was a bit of a drag. The reason is she has a great yet lush hairdo with lots of individual hairs and locks sticking out. Consequently, one cannot compare height and width to establish a clear ratio for defining spatial boundaries on paper. Luckily I could get hold of the length from chin to the scalp just below the hairline. From there to the end of the hairdo way up was equal in length. Cubist Planes The initial goal was to keep it cubist looking and I think I did a good job. Especially some cubist planes in her chest do their abstract magic. These areas can be bothersome to depict. Her clavicles weren’t showing to much because of the overexposure. Nevertheless, by styling some light planes into more abstract ones I got a beautiful contrast with her head. The play of light and dark on her face are cubist too yet more refined. A lovely live session and I got her likeness within that hour.

Henriëtte Sibie This pastel drawing ‘Model Session – 18-10-25 – 1’ is a continuation of my cubist endeavours during live model drawing sessions. Henriëtte Sibie was our model this time. She came to visit us again in community center ‘De Blauwe Tram’. However, not the first time. Last time was about a year ago and in the past I worked with her at Brugman Art in Voorburg. Those who consider themselves live model draftsmen and painters matter once they had the pleasure to meet her. Surely, there are a lot of models around. They flock academies throughout the Netherlands and groups like ours but Henriëtte is knows by all. Also yours truely and my painting of her portrait I made back in 2013 got even sold. Time to extend my series of artworks with her beautiful features and personality as theme. A Reclining Posee A reclining pose was the first one whe had her struck this afternoon. Luckily I had a good view on her front with a slightly slanted mattress she reclined on. Regularly it strikes me people during a live drawing session often tend to begin right away. Not me though because I take my time to thoroughly think through a fine composition. Rule number one I learnt in the past: when someone is lieing flat in a full frontal vision, be alarmed! Trying to capture a model from head to toe is useless. It’ll only deliver you a slender sausage on a paper with more than 75% negative space. That was the reason to skip the lower leg of Jelco in my last pastel drawing by the way. Impressionist Cubism In order to avoid such mishaps I decided not to include her lower legs. From elbow to the upper side of the head formed about 2/3rd of the total height of the paper. The mattress forms were also fun and a good excuse to fill up the negative space. Not to much though, merely a supportive detail to support the body structures. Personally, I like these angular types of impressionist cubism. They serve me well in my search for capturing the model’s forms quickly.

Color Theoretical Challenges This oil painting ‘Neo Deco – 10-07-25’ demonstrates everything I know about color theory. In fact, it’s a search to converge all 6 main colours of the color wheel into a majestic scenery. A tall order you might say and I do agree. Didn’t the great Raphael once proclaim to only use a maximum of 5 main colors at the same time? Well, to some extent I do agree. The use of too many colors can lead to screamy kitsch. Almost as if Bob Ross would have set to work his palette with all colors of the rainbow on it. Therefor, using all six of them seems like wanting to have a taste of the forbidden fruit. However, in the past I already used all 6 before such as in my oil painting ‘Nina – 12-10-23’. The reason my inner urge directed me to used them all once more I will explain below. A Big Gordian Knot It all began with my graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 05-07-16’ which I sold very quickly after its completion. For years I had this on my to do list of oils yet to start. I always thought of it to be a great cubist concept. Successfully merging cubistic body parts I knew this also held the potential of a grand painting. Somehow I had this concept of matching this mergance to the use of colours as well. Almost as if one would look at a display of mother of pearl-like colors. As stated above, a tall order and a big Gordian Knot. This time not one Alexander The Great would solve by simply cutting through it. Soon I found myself in big trouble because all colours were screaming at me in full force. both in the positive and the negative space. The Solution Consequently, this time the forms, composition and proportions weren’t the problem. Those have been sorted out by the prestudy in graphite pencil. For 95% of the time I have suffered because I was constantly looking at a big candy box full of screamy colors. Even though I tuned down many of the color saturation into more subdued colours the solution arrived only today.

Gjon Mili’s Inspirational Influence This oil painting ‘Neo Deco – 07-05-25’ is an elaboration of a recent graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco – 10-03-25’. Homage to Albanian photographer Gjon Mili. Last oil painting was from August 2024 so it was high time for a new one. In addition, I always have considered my drawings as prestudies for future oils to come. Now I come to think of it I have so many drawings that to my opinion are good enough to transfer to oil paint. If I only had enough time before time will catch up with me. Maybe I should paint more this year. Perhaps some outdoor sketching. Well, I don’t know really. The artistic wind may carry me to unknown destinations. 6 Main Colors Anyway, using your own drawing as reference is always a comforting thing. The composition is something to simply take over and then …? Sheer copying is out of the question. Therefor, the most natural inclination is to delve right into the realm of colors. There is true value added! And so I did but I have to confess something. Oh Lord, forgive me for I have sinned. Against the magic rule of max 5 colors according to Raphael’s law. In fact, I used them all (6) in this painting. Hence, it took me quite some time to complete this one. Once you set forth to use a complex color palette you know troubles are bound. Backlighted Initially I was in awe with the sheer beauty of the dress. Especially the backlight that turned the scenery into a spectacular tonal vision. For me that’s meat for the beast so I the drawing was finished quickly and with gusto. Now I come to think of it, that was the very reason I used all six main colours. That is, to depict the effect light has when it permiates through structures. You may say the colors I used have got nothing to do with reality or does it? In fact, you might be wrong. Light has the tendency to break up into the full colour spectrum of a rainbow. Furthermore, I strived for a perfect balance between cool and warm, and complementary colors.

Alive and Kicking This graphite pencil drawing ‘Geesje kwak – 05-05-25’ is a return to laying hatched strokes in an impressionist style. Last time I employed it was in ‘De Smorenhoek – 15-12-24’. Almost half a year ago. Since then I did a lot of pastels, no oils (still one in progress) and several cubist portraits and nudes. This is how it goes. Last week I was searching for something new. Whilst installing a new laptop I had all the time in the world and then suddenly it hit me. Why not revisit the ‘Geesje Kwak’ theme. Somehow I knew there was still stuff in the basement. However, I ran out of Breitner reference pictures of her but why not make one up myself. After all, my last painting of her as very much altered to my taste. You know, Geesje isn’t dead really. She just lives on to keep us charmed. A Better Job Then I thought of a drawing I made of her holding a vase. I knew I could do a better job. A bit static maybe but what if I could broathen the scenery by introducing a window to the left. Then I could do a bit of a homage to Breitner. So I depicted his famous Rokin painting with horse and cart in the back. All my life I simply adored this painting. This time I had a closer look at it and it looks more freely or roughly painted than it lets on. It’s just that I reckon painting the horse and carriage placed in slanted position to be a tall order. Surely, it must have costed him some trouble since it’s not easy to get these proportions right impressionistically. Blobs of paint also with the window frames in the back easy can deliver you a rubble pile. Revival Anyway, a bow once more to a great artist. Also a thank you for quite some charming photos and of course paintings of Geesje. Without him we wouldn’t have known of her existance of which we know so little. She symbolizes all unkown hard working people from the past whose tracks are erased by history. If I can manage to revive one of them wouldn’t that bring many alive again too?

Reclined Position This pastel drawing ‘Model Session - 22-04-25 (Jelco) – 2’ is the second pose of this month’s live model session. A reclined position to top it off. The first session took some toll on our male nude model. Surely he did a fine job, standing straight for an hour holding a stick. That’s a tall order but worth the pose. A strong one, almost a bit agressive and that’s always nice for a change. Women I depict are a lot lovelier mostly. Drawing men doesn’t come natural to me, even though I like to delve into the musculature. Then again, an artist should study many things and persons, regardless what gender, species or form. Troubles are Bound Reclined positions can mean trouble. Well, for many participants during sessions. To meantion some troubles: foreshortenings! They can be bothersome if not mastered thoroughly. Often my students draw what they know rather than what they see and therefor proportions are off quickly. As a trained artist I’m off the hook. Another trouble can be taking position right in front of the model. If you’re unlucky the body looks too much horizontal, leading to compositionary boredom. Luckily I managed to manoevre into a position looking at Jelco in a slanted way. Difficult enough because many body parts looked very foreshortened anyway. Take his left arm (viewed from us) for example. It almost looks ‘offish’, especially compared to the extended impression of the leg running across the paper. Corrections Big Time! At the end of this successful live drawing event I was content. However, I did not finish my pastel. Somehow it looked satisfying yet very rudimentary. Doubts with regard to proportions too, I guess. Back home I compared the reference picture I took with the live result. A totally different look and fear really hit me instantly. I think I was off by a mile it seems. But I measured it all out just nice and dandy, I thought. I know I did but the picture looked better.

Jelco Back Again This pastel drawing ‘Model Session - 22-04-25 (Jelco) – 1’ looks like one of those classic academic poses. With a touch of chiaroscuro though. Back in ‘De Blauwe Tram’ in Leidschendam we had male model Jelco pose for us again. Last time was in October 2024. Our group of live drawers and painters mostly consist of women. Therefor it’s only reasonable to invite a man over regularly. Luckily for us Jelco obliged us with his arrival. Slender, elegant yet muscular. Even though I’m a ladiesman myself I always can appreciate a model with clear set-off muscles. From an artistic point of view you can get hold of a subject and define wonderful planes to render. A Bit of a Letdown This having said the pose I had in front of me was a bit of a letdown. We had him pose on a makeshift pedistone. In order to create a more dynamic pose he holds a stick. This also enabled him to stand on the ball of his right foot. Inspiring enough but the letdown expressed itself in quite a boring lighting really. Aforemeant musculature became too faint, only showing in the scare highlights on the arm and leg. The pose itself was quite alright though. Consequently I knew right from the start I had to elaborate this pastel drawing further back home. So I quickly took a photo while the pose was still fresh. Live models tend to not hold their pose after a while. Ultimately Successful Back home I managed to beef up tonality in the picture by cranking up contrasts. That did the trick and now I was able to see more subtle shifts in tones muscularwise. Last but not least I removed most of the white negative space. That had become too white in an attempt to compensate for a lack of tonality in the body. At the end of the session I found it took chalcky, almost as if he was standing in a cold room. Finally all things were balanced out just fine. Not bad for a pastel done withing two hours.
