The thing that bugs me so much about this is a lot of that "grimwashing"
it was a joke
It was literally Comissar Genocide Von Nazistine going, "Why and how can people fight loyally for this so called greater good? it must be BRAIN washing, quick, whip more slaves!"

40k is bad for a lot of reasons but I maintain that the worst is trying to grimdark-wash the Tau instead of leaving them as funny cartoon aliens, who are basically Normal in direct contrast to the entire rest of the setting. It was a fun dynamic but noooo they're actually EVIL and SCARY now
