But Compaq made sure to do their reverse engineed phios was all clean room to the point where every copy of the PC documentation they had, had the pages about the BIOS ripped out of them. There's a good documentary about the Compaq Portable called Silicon Cowboy and it's pretty good.

If I remember correctly, software does have a precedent, but the only example I can think of off the top of my head is when Compaq cloned the IBM PC BIOS for its portable clone of the PC.

NES. Xmas, but it wasn't for a while after it was out. First computer was my profile pic--the Compaq Portable. My grandfather actually gave it to me in 1988 because he was an EE and knew how important it would be. Wrote my first BASIC program in 1989.

I've had this Compaq Evo N610c in my stash for a couple of years after it stopped working all of a sudden. Took it apart multiple times, swapped RAM, CPU, CMOS battery, DC-DC converter board, literally everything you could think of... No change.

Wrapping up the Compaq. Really interesting machine. Cyrix Media GX was ahead of its time in many ways. 486-derived with built in graphics and SB16. SoC if you will. And this Compaq is now in lovely condition. 😍

Painted the grills with Anthracite.
Almost a perfect match. 😍
The fabric behind the grills was also rust-stained, so I painted them with a dusting of matte black. What seems to have worked nicely too.
There's one scuff on the front I haven't been able to work through in fear of making it shiny.
