I want our Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies department back. And Women and Gender Studies.

There was so much damage done to institutions that will take real effort to be restored.

I have a new paper out with @jgansmorse.bsky.social and Dan Gingerich on area studies and comparative politics.

These are fraught times in world politics and higher ed, and area studies is more important than ever -- and not just in political science

Comparative housing construction, Canada v. the US
Interesting chart. Apparently Canada's better results partially thanks to government housing programs. Maybe also materials not tariffed, and workers not deported?

THIS is comparative politics
I've had a long running bit about NC and Hungary tracking: both had supermajorities win in 2010 then gerrymandered, undercut the courts, and attacked universities over sixteen years. Shot and chaser is both flipping in 2026.

Anyways, what a night to cap off a banger two weeks for democracy.

Something that most people will acknowledge but we also seem to constantly forget is that voters really respond to authenticity, regardless of content. DSA’s huge comparative advantage is that they typically confidently state their beliefs and don’t back down from them.

I know that's a side plot in our national story, and most mainstream analysis pegs Venezuela as a comparative success story, but the open colonialism of it all remains genuinely shocking to me. Really shows how much Rubio has mutated from his 2016 form.

I’ll then offer some comparative analysis with the election results and the general discourse. After that, I’m going to try drawing a few conclusions of my own.
