Family: Compsognathidae
Name meaning: Pretty jaw

They also believe this specimen was a baby likely only a few days old.

The exact classification of it is uncertain as we only have one specimen.

Most have classified it as a member of Compsognathidae, but one paleontologist proposed Carcharodontosauridae or even outside of Spinosauridae.

- plus the Jurassic Park franchise has a tendency to use their names interchangeably, they actually aren't closely related at all! Procompsognathus is a coelophysid, as mentioned before, while Compsognathus has its own group of theropods called Compsognathidae! (2/2)

If we use the definition provided in the 2nd edition of "The Dinosauria" (Compsognathus longipes + all taxa sharing a more recent common ancestor with it than with Passer domesticus) then we might have a situation where Compsognathidae refers to all sorts of things outside of its normal conception.

Meet Sinosauropteryx prima, a tiny compsognathidae that lived in the Yixian Formation a 124.6 - 122 Million Years ago coming to Primordial Kingdom!

Compsognathidae of tradition is almost certainly not a real clade, but there does seem to have been a lot of relatively small, generalised small coelurosaurs at the base of Coelurosauria. Whether or not any of those animals form a clade, and if that clade includes Compsognathus, needs more study!

So what’s your take on the Compsognathidae family? Real clade, or not?

There is, however, Compsognathidae which are like MUCH smaller raptors.

This is my personal favorite of the bunch: the Sinosauropteryx

earlier films kinda use compsognathus for this purpose; given the taxonomic ??? around compsognathidae as a whole, it could be interesting to explore this with something like microraptor instead, which was a flying dinosaur

Interesting and kind of mind blowing idea, but I think the whole “compys are just hatchlings of large theropods. Compsognathidae is not a real clade,” needs a bit more testing before we can see if that’s the case or not.
New at #Patreon: discussion of this scene of Sinosauropteryx waiting out a feeding Yutyrannus for carcass access. Or - hold on - are they waiting for their parent to feed them? Behold, the compsognathid identity dispute, now #paleoart flavoured! #sciart #dinosaurs
