Zanzibar has launched a three-year initiative called Mikoko Hai to restore mangrove ecosystems and improve livelihoods for coastal communities in Chwaka Bay and Menai Bay. The project, implemented by STAWI Africa Foundation in partnership with Graine de Vie Luxembourg and Zanzibar's Department of Forestry, aims to combine mangrove restoration with income-generating activities such as beekeeping, seaweed farming, and agroforestry. Communities will participate in mangrove patrols, environmental monitoring, and training programs to develop alternative income sources. The initiative, launched on September 3, 2026, seeks to strengthen climate resilience and protect coastal ecosystems while supporting local economies. Funding includes contributions from the Government of Luxembourg, and the partnership with the Department of Forestry is expected to ensure long-term technical support and local ownership of restoration efforts beyond the project's duration.
