Evidence for spin-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity in electron-doped cuprates
The Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer theory of superconductivity, where the electron–phonon interaction binds two electrons into a Cooper pair, forms the basis of our present understanding of conventional superconductors. The critical temperature Tc is governed by an electron–phonon coupling constant λph through the McMillan formula1. The same interaction is also known to scatter electrons in the normal (resistive) state. At intermediate temperatures, where the resistivity ρ(T) is T linear, the associated scattering rate 1/τ = 2πλtrT. Here λtr is a measure of the electron–phonon coupling strength as manifested in charge transport. A near equivalence of λph and λtr has been demonstrated for a wide array of elements and alloys2 (Supplementary Fig. 2), affirming the correlation between the pairing strength and the strength of the relevant (transport) scattering process. Many superconductors of current interest, including heavy fermions, Fe-based superconductors, organic conductors, nickelates and cuprates, are believed to have a pairing mechanism that is non-phononic in origin. A common feature in many of these systems is their proximity to magnetic order, thereby motivating models based on coupling to spin fluctuations3,4. (TMTSF)2PF6, for example, undergoes a spin-density-wave transition with an onset temperature that is suppressed with applied pressure, giving way to a dome of superconductivity that...

Kinetics and thermodynamics study of proline adsorption and its inhibitory effect on calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystal growth
In the present study, the kinetics and thermodynamics of crystal growth of COM seed crystals at 37 °C, ionic strength (I) = 0.3 mol dm− 3, pH = 5.5 ± 0.01, and 10 mg of seed crystals in the absence of additive an in the presence of 10− 6 mol dm− 3 of pro molecules using a single constant-composition kinetic run. For sparingly soluble salts, MaAb, the crystal growth rate normalized to the seed surface area which is determined by BET analysis, is expressed by Eq. (1): $$\:R\hspace{0.17em}=\hspace{0.17em}d\left[M_aA_b\right]/dt\hspace{0.17em}=\hspace{0.17em}k\:\Omega\:^{n}$$ (1) Where: R is the rate of the crystal growth rate process, k is the crystal growth rate constant, Ω is the relative degree of supersaturation, n is the effective reaction order. In aqueous supersaturated solutions, the driving force for COM crystal growth (ΔGCOM) corresponds to the Gibbs free energy difference between the supersaturated condition and equilibrium (Bouropulos et al. 1996) (Eq. (2)): $$\:\varDelta\:G_{COM}\hspace{0.17em}=\hspace{0.17em}-\hspace{0.17em}RT/\:2.\:(a_{ca2+}.\:a_{Ox-2}\:/\:K_{sp})$$ (2) Where: R and T are the gas constant and the absolute temperature, respectively, aca2+ and aOx 2− : are the activities of calcium and oxalate ions respectively, Ksp is the thermodynamic solubility product of COM (2.57 × 10− 9 mol2/l2) at 37 °C. Normal-inverse-gamma (NIG) regression is not uniquely identifiable from its marginal Student-t likelihood: the likelihood determines three combinations of four NIG parameters and is constant along a one-dimensional fiber. We identify that fiber using independent physical measurement. As an initial …

pH-Controlled Nano-Biochar Reaction Drives 2.5-Fold Speed Boost in Silver Recovery
A recent study in Biochar by Shiguo Gu, Dandan Wang, Tongtong Wang, and Wei Zhu demonstrates that nano-biochar pyrolyzed at four hundred degrees Celsius reduces silver ions to silver nanoparticles at a pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.203 per minute under a pH of nine point five—approximately two point five times faster than nano-biochar pyrolyzed at seven hundred degrees Celsius, which achieves a rate constant of 0.082 per minute.
