Hey it's #PortfolioDay again! My name is Louis Whitworth, I am a Technical Animator! I specialize in rigging, scripting, animation systems, and procedural animations, like this dune hopping monobike that is 100% procedurally animated with #ControlRig in @unrealengine.bsky.social

Having fun diving into UE Control Rig lately.

Epic’s new resources pushed me to explore more, especially physics and runtime animation.

I'm finally developing a deep, abiding, painful understanding of what "rigging" as opposed to "skinning"

It's fun! ControlRig makes this shit so good, and animating in Unreal is going to be great!

But.

I will never type "skinning/rigging" like they're basically the same task, EVER, again.

Gaits for Dinobird: Walking, Running, and Sprinting. This was refreshingly straight forward compared to RootYaw and Jumping, and it works pretty well with the other systems with no nasty surprises. A good week!

Got the materials and rig set up in Unreal. It's a whole different way of thinking of things, and it doesn't help that the documentation for Unreal's control rig is esoteric at best, but it is satisfying to see it all coming together.

Had a problem with a rig at work, couldn't stop thinking about it so I launched UE to try to find a solution. After a lot of Googling I found something that hopefully will work!

Parallel transport frame I love you 🥰

#GameDev #ControlRig #Rigging #Ue5 #Oc #DnD #Question I think it's a sphere trace issue. I don't know the short cut command to see the Sphere trace from CTRL rig in the viewport. I checked the Content Examples and don't know where they check the visibility debug setting

More polish incoming, but I hit another milestone of it looking somewhat decent. Still need to clamp the leaning back, and probably add in some weight shifting where the pelvis/feet actually reposition to really sell the idea of balance.

This one's still the kicker for me

Unreal Nanite? AnimBP? PCG? ControlRig? StateTree? Incredible tech, saved me so much time, I miss it a ton using Godot. Epic sucks! Massively? And I'm still saying this!

If GenAI were truly a time savings? You'd have to beat indies off with a stick. And yet,

Break through. Spent large part of the week not having success getting Root Yaw Offset applied to the actual character without horrible contortions, but then it clicked yesterday. Quite a big difference with than without it!

Day 33: Control rig day! Rigged asset, but needed custom controls. Tedious work, tweaks deform the mesh. #unrealengine #scifi #animation #controlrig

The tail sphere trace was adjusted but need to find a way to get the logic to work on going down stairs with the tail. I hit some walls and it pops up too high. #GameDev #ControlRig

I am back to work so I do not have as much time to do this as I did over the break.

I was able to advance quite a lot today! Fixed a ton of bugs, got to sculpt some shapes like the neck tension, rigged the full eyelids system, head squash, all hairs... almost wrapping up!! Zip lips, brows correctives, squint and sneer and adding actual physics hair to go.

This weekend's progress.
I modeled blendshapes entirely inside UE and it's a pretty smooth process! Some quirks with mirroring but still pretty handy. I have a few cycle issues I found only happen when animating in Sequencer, I'll fix that and prob wrap this project up!

I guess I should sometimes actually share the Patreon in a "hey, subscribers help!" kinda way: www.patreon.com/posts/ah-hol...

Anyways, next two posts will be how to use fake/heavy gravity to make games feel "heavier" and a UE5 ControlRig deep dive

Bro it's worse than that, this is literally the first time I've even RUN Blender. Never even took a half hearted stab at learning it before! Not once!

And the How is: well, ProBuilder, then RealtimeCSG, then Houdini, then Unreal Mesh Tools, then PCG, then ControlRig, then-

#UE5.7 #controlrig #Physics. Been working on my side project and I think I have Billy/Gorgon in a really good place. I figured out how to blend lower body anims and control rig logic with my #gorogon while he was walking. I am planning to have some more non-bipedal characters soon.

Still have some edge cases to figure out. I am using the Sphere Trace on his Pelvis and a second Sphere trace for his lower tail since it's so far back with a mock extra bone. I need to adjust it for wall hits and maybe the animation on moving.

Spider locomotion driven by UE5 Control Rig. A delta-time cycle drives the animation by offsetting each leg’s end position into the future (t + offset), projecting where the foot should land and moving legs sequentially for smooth procedural motion.
