Postcards from Snagglepuss
Postcards from Snagglepuss (Minnesota State Fair edition) And so, ‘tis Opening Day … And what an interesting morning therefor–or is it thereat? Slightly foggy, yet decently comfortable, with limited threat of rain. Enough so that Huckleberry Hound, yours truly, and The Banana Splits even, more or less joining us in the State Fair Campground in their CoolBus, walk over to the legendary Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church Dining Hall for brekkie, as the Aussies call breakfast. Bound, at any rate, to attract surprise from the first day patrons bound to enjoy as much the legendary Swedish Egg Coffee as the presence of celebrities not unlike us. Especially Bingo, Drooper, Fleegle and Snorky, who are seeking to buy redemption, in a way, from the injury to name and repute which a certain tasteless horror film inflicted upon them. Even if it meant pancakes, sausage and that rather remarkable coffee which, for some reason, Drooper couldn’t get enough of. “Though I have to acknowledge, Snag,” remarked Huckleberry Hound over an egg/sausage/hash browns breakfast, “that I can’t help but enjoy a decent old-school breakfast such as this.” Myself, I had a ham and cheese omlette with hash browns, remarking “And they say the church dining halls here are becoming something of an endangered species … the food, though, is rather decent, and need I mention the coffee?” Huck, for his part, took note of a somewhat legendary church hall tradition at the North Carolina State Fair in form of the ham biscuit sandwiches at the Cary United Methodist Church’s dining hall, noting just how delectably tender those biscuits can’t help but being … and across the aisle, the wait staff (volunteers, mind you) couldn’t help but exchange conversation with The Banana Splits and request autographs even as the coffee refills kept coming, prompting Fleegle to wonder how much longer it’ll be before they seek out the mens’ room, attracting laughs from the crowd. Caffeine’s bound to do as much, anyway. ============= At any rate, in keeping with established custom, the receipt for the Swedish Egg Coffee follows, enough for a vacuum pot for 48 cups: Bring one gallon of freshly-drawn cold water to boil in a splatterware container. In a separate splatterware container, combine 3 lbs. ground coffee, one egg (shell and all) and enough water to just barely moisten the whole. Pour the boiling water over the coffee mixture, and bring that to a boil in its own right, stirring to combine. Filter and decant into a vacuum pot or urn. ************* @warnerbrosentertainment @stuffaboutminneapolis @hanna-barberians @ultrakeencollectionbreadfan @archive-archives @passionateclown @hanna-barbera-land @stuffaboutminnesota @warnerbrosent-blog
