A couple Coregonids from our gill nets today. Cisco are an abundant forage species in this particular lake, but lake whitefish are far less common; this is the first one sampled in a gill net in the three years I’ve been here! #52FishyFridays 🐟🐠

Did some plankton tows along the beach this morning looking for larval Coregonids. Didn't see any whitefish or cisco but I did get a rich soup of zooplankton!

Big thanks to @drfishsg.bsky.social for taking me on a marginally fruitful larval whitefish quest today along the western shore of Lake Michigan. I find myself harboring a new respect for the mighty Coregonids, beleaguered staples of Great Lakes food webs!

@Etheostomatt @superiorliscous ok let's think about how this can apply to coregonids!

And new/proposed restoration efforts like Cisco & other #GreatLakes coregonids (also important in face of alewife collapse) 5/

Digging through old #coregonids literature in the library is always exciting ! Fascinating to see the extant of work done on these fishes over the years.
