Doesn’t purple always stand out? I spotted this corncockle in a florist’s bouquet, surrounded by so many other flowers—but this one instantly caught my eye. I’d never seen one before. 💜💜💜

A favourite combination this year, the beautiful Orlaya grandiflora and the bright white Corncockle 'Bianca', in a posy with Canterbury bells and acid green Alchemilla mollis. Just love the little dotted lines inside the Corncockle.

I love an eye popping colour clash! Calendula and corncockle are both easy to grow from seed and great for insects 🌱

Introduced, but surviving, were Corncockle, Corn Chamomile and Corn Marigold, all plentiful due to seeding of the verges of a new road in 2025 near Roche, Cornwall. #wildflowerhour

Once common in cornfields, Corncockle arrived in the UK with ancient grain seed. Its magenta blooms became a farmland staple but vanished with modern farming. Now revived in gardens, it’s loved for its old-world charm, easy growth, and value to pollinators. A true countryside classic. 🌱

In 1956 some of this scene was already mainly memory in England, Corncrake had become rare with horse drawn mechanical reaper. Corncockle was a seed contaminant, better seed cleaning it was gone, Cornflower and other arable weeds like poppy started to be eradicated by 2,4-D introduced in 1946.
