This 2,000 year-old woman’s luxury leather sandal is stamped with the maker’s name ‘Lucius Aebutius Thales’!

Made in Gaul (France), it was excavated from the residence of the commanding officer at Vindolanda, a Roman fort on the northern frontier.

I would be so interested in hearing about this. The Cornucopiae is so interesting, and I just have no sense of Perotti as a person.

I was thinking about scorpions in ancient iconography this morning and this reminded me of the coins where the Roman personification of Africa 'offers' a scorpion. I so want to cross read the image as proclaiming "settler-colonists beware! Hands off our stuff."
