First Tuesday of the month -- my (self-imposed) blog post day!

Today, I am revisiting the weird story of the "other eight" (aka "clade 7896", lineage 4): eight bat coronavirus sequences from the Mojiang mine, at the center of a narrative invented by lab leakers. ▫️1/6🧵

#covidorigin 🧪
The saga of the “other eight”
DRASTIC and Chan & Ridley fabricated a narrative about eight virus sequences from the Mojiang mine. With the benefit of hindsight, lets reevaluate their claims.  Latinne et al.'s study In late May 202...

In a new blog post, I revisit a claim made by Steven Quay, rumored to be the next NIAID director:
that "Genome sequence archives" for SARS-CoV-2 sequences from patients at an Army hospital "were created on December 10, 2019".

This was not the case ▫️1/🧵 #covidorigin
pandemonium.hypotheses.org/1938
Did the European Nucleotide Archive receive SARS-CoV-2 sequences from Wuhan as early as 10 December 2019?
(TL;DR: No.) Some lab leakers claimed that SARS-CoV-2 sequences had been submitted to the ENA online repository on 10 Dec 2019, several days before the first known submitted sequence, and also even be...

Last week, David Relman published an Opinion in The Guardian about the origin of COVID-19, NIH and Anthony Fauci. I had some comments about it... so I wrote a blog post. ⬇️

In a recent Opinion piece in The Guardian, David Relman discusses the origin of COVID-19 in the context of the Fauci hearing before Rand Paul's committee. The text overlooks scientific evidence, engag...

As Covid lab leak suspicion lingers, WHO urges China to share virus origin data
The source of the coronavirus, which is estimated to have killed 7 million people, has been a controversial mystery for years.

Prior to Fauci's hearing, Rand Paul released emails from 2021 that revived a conspiracy theory alleging that the genetic sequence of RaTG13 (once SARS-CoV-2's closest relative) had been altered.

I wrote up what used to be a Twitter thread and updated it with new information: ⬇️ #covidorigin
Yu’s table 3.2
In 2021, leakers tried, and failed, to reproduce a table of identities between SARS-like coronaviruses that was presented in a 2019 MSc thesis from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. They concluded that...

Also, Quay found it OK to publish COVID work in a clearly predatory journal (Fortune Journals), with people like Daoyu Zhang (aka Flavinkins aka AlmanaLepiz), a person flagged by Bellingcat in 2020 as central in anti-WHO disinformation▫️9/

As Alex says, Quay is at the origin of very weird COVID-19 origin scenarios -- often based on very basic errors (more to it later).

@zachhensel.bsky.social will love to tell you about "ORF8 is diabolical". ▫️8/

So, something that the media will sanewash as this story develops is Quay isn't just a lab origin proponent. He has for 5 years sold an endless stream of very specifically wrong and silly ideas on the topic. He's not right, but even if he was, that wouldn't excuse his fabrications along the way!
August 5, 2026 at 3:27 PM
Back to COVID claims, there is much, much more to say.

He lied in the opening anecdote of his recent book, claiming to have been in the metro in Wuhan in 2014 from the airport, while there was no metro there yet. ▫️7/

Add to it some gratuitous cringiness, when he and other leakers harassed an editor because they did not like a paper (ours...), to the point that the editor had to close their social media accounts.

Because the Venn diagram of lab leakers and antivaxxers is close to a circle, Quay is antivaxx. It helps to work under RFK Jr., I guess.

Here he is, rewritting tweets by accounts that described every sudden death as being caused by a vaccine. ▫️3/

Steven Quay, in line to be NIAID director, is not just any lab leaker. He is of the type of leakers who still talk about "HIV inserts".

Zach found this recording recently, and it's a crucial piece of evidence that thoroughly refutes a theory put forward by Alina Chan, DRASTIC, and even, according to what we read in Vanity Fair, the FBI. Check his thread! #covidorigin
It's a public webinar that Zhengli Shi delivered on March 9, 2020, before a global pandemic had been declared.

In this clip from the talk, Shi delineates 4 sarbecovirus lineages. The 8 samples in "Lineage 4" are the ones in the figure most closely related to SARS-CoV-2.

People say "lab leak" (singular) but there is in fact a multiple of Covid origin scenarios involving research.

Rand Paul wants to use the topic to attack Fauci, but questions asked by his staff draw from a diversity of origin scenarios, including China-only versions.
He has nothing. #covidorigin
