On the Russian vodka situation, I remember when Gorbachev cracked down on alcoholism, and it didn't end well. There was such an increase in moonshine that it caused a sugar shortage.

I, like anyone else in college in the early 1980's, had the unique experience of seeing three General Secretaries of the CPSU succeed one another in rapid sequence.

My critique of Carter is actually pretty much from the nuclear dove point of view, not a neocon analysis. But maybe you liked Stealth, the MX, and the Trident, and a nuclear doctrine that emphasized destroying every CPSU HQ in the Soviet Union.
A NeoCon critique of Carter's Cold War policy the day after he died is about as useful and as timely as a six-pack at an AA meeting.

the only party to have ever won an absolute majority of seats in the Lithuanian Parliament was the Democratic Labour Party, which is what the Lithuanian Communist Party renamed themselves to after they backed independence and split from the CPSU
polish postcommunists basically cowrote the current constitution. the guy who signed it was a minister w/o portfolio in the last communist government, personally chosen by the pm. after that the same guy ratified accession to nato. after that him and his pm, member of politburo, signed the eu papers
There is a rather elaborate conversation we might have about what their understanding of the words "on the left" was, but it is really quite important that all of you remember that actually there are quite a few countries in Eastern Europe that have had multiple "left" governments since 1991.

Also to clarify I dont doubt people geniunely feared the return of the CPSU I just dont think the ex-CPSU the remaining CPSU or the CPSU adjacents had the penasch or the skills to organise a comeback.
