Whatever the number, cryptics certainly seem to have had a recent upsurge in popularity. The quality of the clues to which people are exposed is questionable, though. I look at the CrackingtheCryptic guys and the validity they give to the often derisible MinuteCryptic and, frankly, despair!

Have you seen the guys on YouTube doing insanely hard sudoku variations? These are guys who could do the NYT sudoku in 5/10 minutes, spending anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 HOURS on 1 sudoku. They talk through the logic of each step along the way. It's Mesmerizingly impressive.

Check out the channel “crackingthecryptic”. They have a sudoku app where they load the puzzle and provide it by direct link with thousands trying on their own and using their video to get unstuck, or seeing a more efficient solve. Something similar through quizlet or similar might be interesting
