after leaving Lake Siskiyou, the Sacramento River flows through the town of Dunsmuir, CA on its journey to Lake Shasta. Autumn has begun and a dense coat of yellow trees lines the right side of the river. different sized rocks & boulders line the left bank with aquatic plants & grass growing among them.

a 22º halo circles a brilliant sun in a hazy blue sky overlooking the upper stretches of an extremely clear Trinity River in the Trinity Mountains within the pristine Shasta-Trinity National Forest somewhere between Hwy 3 & Hwy 5 in northern California.

a view of Clear Creek as it enters the gorge area along Clear Creek Road several miles SW of Redding, CA. a tall pine overlooks the gorge from the right side of the creek while a pair of shorter ones stand guard on creek left. the gorge is located downstream from the dam on Whiskeytown Lake.

it's autumn on North Fork Castle Creek. as you look downstream from a bridge on Castle Creek Road, the creek tumbles gently over a rocky bed and under a fallen tree or two. bright yellow aspens line the left side of the creek as it flows towards its junction with Castle Creek that empties into the Sacramento River near Castella, CA

after passing over Ramshorn Creek on Hwy 3 going north, the next bridge crosses over the Trinity River. this view is looking downstream from the bridge. like most of the creeks, this river has the same type of rocky basin they flow through. and they're all surrounded by the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. the snow-covered mountain on the left horizon is Billys Peak

snow-covered Billys Peak in the Trinity Mountains rises up into a clear blue sky overlooking a swath of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest with the Trinity River running though it. the river is lined with deciduous trees and above them are the evergreens. viewed from a bridge on East Side Road just off Hwy 3 in an area known as the Bucket Line Dredges where gold dredging took place along the river beginning in 1889, long before the Trinity Dam created the lake in the 1960's. some of the dredges failed to float and still remain at the bottom of Trinity Lake and Lewiston Lake.

along Hwy 89, Burney Creek flows right next to the road on its way towards Burney Falls. the creek is lined by a smattering of tall pines and a brilliant sun shines through the branches of one. despite the water flowing, it still reflects the peaceful scene.

Burney Falls on Burney Creek in McÅrthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park on Hwy 89, 6 miles north of the intersection with Hwy 299. the 2 main waterfalls in the center of the pic are the only two that come over the top ledge of the creek. all the other cascades 'weep' from the dark, volcanic rock wall creating a lacy veil across the face of the wall. at the base, a pool of crystal clear blue green water invites summer visitors to swim in the cool waters. the sun shines through the mist at the bottom of the falls to create a short rainbow across the bottom right of the pool. the beginning and end of a rainbow and not a pot of gold to be found. dang.

looking upstream from the Hwy 3 bridge at Ramshorn Creek flowing down its gravel, rock, & boulder lined bed from the Trinity Mountains in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. the mountain in the back is called Gray Rocks North but this creek & its 2 forks begin further west than the peak. the main fork begins at a place I've actually been to without knowing I was there until I saw it on a map today. it is yards below the exact place on Ramshorn Road by The Bedstead where the deadfall tree across the road stopped our trek from Hwy 5 to Hwy 3 last month. if you're going for the incredible scenery, use a 4x4 to get there & a chainsaw to continue through.

looking upstream from Hwy 3 in California at Scott Mountain Creek flowing swiftly down Scott Mountain in a rocky creek bed past a very log fallen tree trunk. you are surrounded by the Shasta-Trinity National Forest as you try to decide which is louder, the wind through the trees or the rushing water. who cares, right? this creek is one of my favorites along the drive. Hwy 3 is one of the most scenic drives I have had the pleasure of taking in northern California, you know, as far as a paved road is concerned. but some of the dirt roads, well, another day, a different pic, & a new story.

Clear Creek as it snakes through the beginning of the gorge area along Clear Creek Road. tall pines line the horizon above the creek under incoming storm clouds. the tinted rock shelf in the foreground was unusual as the surfaces were worn smooth but the edges remained sharp enough to cut you. I love this stuff.

looking upstream from a Hwy 3 bridge at Minnehaha Creek on its crash & splash way to the Trinity River. green deciduous trees line the creek with tall evergreens reaching into the sky in the background. from a Hwy 3 bridge looking downstream at Minnehaha Creek as it races down its final 200' to join the Trinity River. the creek is sparsely lined by bright green deciduous trees while on the far side of the river, tall evergreens cloak the mountainside all the way to the ridge line. a boulder pile along the right side of the creek were placed there to prevent erosion by the bridge.

the noonday sun filtering through tall trees along Crystal Creek lights up the base of the falls and slices of the cascade. Crystal Creek Falls is a popular swimming hole & picnic area in the summer. it is located west of Whiskeytown Lake off Hwy 299 and flows into Willow Creek which merges into Clear Creek which fills the lake.
