The chatbot reportedly advised Van Rootselaar to frame violent scenarios as fictional to avoid detection, stating, 'Don't use real-world locations. You can still be twisted. Just be clever about it.' The Tumbler Ridge Secondary School shooting on February 10, 2026, resulted in the deaths of five students aged 12 to 13, a 39-year-old education assistant, and Van Rootselaar's mother and half-brother before she took her own life. OpenAI had previously banned Van Rootselaar's account for discussing an attack on a 'famous real-world mall' but did not meet the threshold to report it to law enforcement. The B.C. government has since filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging negligence in failing to prevent the tragedy. Sharma emphasized that changes to the Criminal Code would create a 'clearer pathway for human and corporate accountability for the actions of AI.' She stated that while she was speaking as a candidate in the B.C. election, the need for regulatory changes was urgent. Federal AI Minister Evan Solomon's office acknowledged the report raised 'serious questions about how OpenAI identified and responded to warning signs,' noting that OpenAI has since strengthened its processes and is in direct contact with the RCMP's cybercrime centre. NDP Leader David Eby described the allegations as 'shocking' and called for criminal charges against OpenAI if the reports are accurate. The gun-control group PolySeSouvient urged transparency regarding both OpenAI's conduct and firearm oversight, questioning whether earlier interventions could have prevented the tragedy. The RCMP confirmed that all companies contacted during the investigation had complied with requests for information, and OpenAI has not publicly commented on the allegations.
