Specifically, the CropImage modal uses react-avatar-editor to crop, then gets the canvas and converts the image to jpeg with .toDataURL('image/jpeg')
The Composer just passes that directly to apilib.post, and then it's just convertDataURIToUint8Array of that set as the request body to uploadBlob
