I guess it's reasonable for subfloor crossbracing to need a bit of TLC after 80 years but all this crawling is tiresome.

I think you'd want to add a bunch of crossbracing as well because otherwise you'd end up racking the fuck out of the benchwork when you moved it.

Just spent an hour unloading and dismantling one of my shelves. Badly designed, no crossbracing, it was leaning about seven inches out of true, yikes.
Now have a pile of crap that should be on shelves, but isn't, and a possible trip to IKEA tomorrow...

Arrrrgh...

More of an engineering problem. Without the pencil thin straps there was no more cutting into the shoulder muscle and the 4in zipper up the back added more stability along with the crossbracing X pattern in back.

Interior walls are much more likely to have plumbing, wires, crossbracing, and (In older buildings) and other signal disrupting innards, and fewer windows. And depending on your access point location, the street may be one wall away, but your bedroom could have multiple walls in between.
