What size is too big, again? bsky.app/profile/crsc...
Between yesterday and today, my wife has ridden 12 miles in the front of the library Urban Arrow, as we've run errands and gotten meals together. Those 12 miles are otherwise miles that would have been done in a car.

My wife has a mobility disability, but together, we can still get around by bike.

Ah yeah that explains that bsky.app/profile/crsc...
Strava typically counts moving time. You probably unlocked the bike for 36 minutes, 30 minutes are included and you paid extra for the extra 6 minutes (which is designed to get you to keep most rides under 30 minutes).

And actually, Platner’s probably NOT getting CRSC — and many people can’t — because he’s not retired.

pleased to inspire / give life advice (and now I have the pleasure of telling planners in D.C. that we gotta legalize sixplexes bc Cambridge) bsky.app/profile/crsc...
Related: a few years ago, I was talking to @alexbaca.bsky.social about the fact that i felt bad I hadn't "done more" to help improve the perception of the YIMBY brand. She said "Well, what have you been doing instead?"

"Just winning City Council elections."

She told me to shut up and keep winning.
I have focused much of my advocacy over the past few years on influencing individual people, rather than policy, because I have found that type of work to be more rewarding, and every person I can bring into the fold becomes another person to help build the leverage for policy fights.

Seems clear she's doing damage control, not addressing what actually happened, but putting in retroactive spin

bsky.app/profile/crsc...
So, the mayor's office says "The City is closely working with the MBTA".

But in February, after months of foot-dragging, the city planner said they had been directed *not* to meet with the MBTA.

And the "full comment letter" is dated March 23rd.

Hard not to see this as *in response* to bad press.
We also shared with Streetsblog our full comment letter to the T (drive.google.com/file/d/11cJf...) & the Disability Commission’s markup on the technical drawings (drive.google.com/file/d/17zW1...). Neither were referenced in the article.

It seems it's not as stupid as I thought and it may be driven by a good reason after all:
bsky.app/profile/crsc...
This is driven by the need to protect users from Geofence warrants that have been absolutely abused and misused by prosecutors, and is the result of a half-decade long push by privacy-focused organizations like the EFF to push Google away from holding onto this data. www.eff.org/deeplinks/20...
Is This the End of Geofence Warrants?
Google announced this week that it will be making several important changes to the way it handles users’ “Location History” data. These changes would appear to make it much more difficult—if not impos...

Far right parties worldwide never fear vigorously defending the world's worst evils. Why do allegedly center-left parties (US Dems, UK Labour, NZ Labour) feel so relatively timid about speaking up against injustice?

This moment in history demands speaking up!

I do get the sense that the DSA is way more conservative about endorsements than other groups, based on the Boston one bsky.app/profile/crsc...
The DSA isn't really doing "endorsements": endorsing a candidate is really "committing the DSA membership to an active political project to campaign". The Al-Zubi sign-holders I met yesterday across the city were DSA-member volunteers helping run the campaign. This leads to a very different meaning.

I talked about it a bit with some people in replies to this thread. It might be possible to get extra payments if he was medically retired via Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC) but as far as I know Platner didn't get medical retirement, I think his enlistment term just ended.
I remain curious about Platner's VA disability rating. In this 2025 interview he says he receives "about $4800" a month from the VA for a 100% disability rating.

Damage control. They heard a bad article was coming out, and rushed a response so they could pretend they're doing something. bsky.app/profile/crsc...
Okay, so on further review:
- The City's comments are car-brained.
- Their proposals substantially hurt the project.
- The planners (who have expertise) were not allowed to engage with the MBTA.
- A mayoral appointee was the person driving the response.

Damage control.

Air Traffic Control mistakenly cleared a firetruck to cross the runway just as a plane was landing. Not clear why yet -- they may have already believed this plane was past the crossing point, or made some other mistake -- but the firetruck crossed immediately after the plane landed.

Also, the paper that's being cited is completely wrong, based on a complete misstatement of what is being measured, which has effectively nothing to do with "data centers" per se, and just has to do with "building buildings". (Which I'm also a fan of.)

bsky.app/profile/crsc...
The actual result the paper is measuring is approximately "the area around newly built buildings feels warmer to the touch than the grass or trees they replace."

Thanks to Andy for doing a breakdown on what it is actually measuring and why it's not particularly related to data centers.
Okay folks I've responded to the data center heat island paper. It is the worst study on AI and the environment I've ever read, by far. Thank you to @beijingpalmer.bsky.social for flagging. blog.andymasley.com/p/data-cente...

If you're in Albany, CRSC notes that area through Delaware and Second Ave as high risk.
August 28, 2025 at 3:50 PM
The whole study feels like the conclusion ("data center *operations* to support AI have impacted the environment in a uniquely bad way") was written first, and then they tried to make the data fit to it.

there just literally isn't any difference between these things. "Doing research", "creating an ML based sentiment detector", and "training an LLM to do sentiment prediction based on text" are just three different sets of words to describe the exact same thing. bsky.app/profile/crsc...
"Scientific research" and "using text to build a model that someone is going to profit from" are in many cases literally the same thing.

StyleGAN, which powered "This Person Does Not Exist", was a research project using an open dataset. Once it existed, people could do other things with it.
Scientific research and archiving for posterity are not at all the same thing as using that text to build a model that someone is going to use to profit from.
