Hey now, keeping that buttercream frosting from melting in the DC heat took an entire team at JPL and two spare cryocoolers from the Space Shuttle.

I think with sun shades and cryocoolers boil off can probably be controlled. But if they can only get 30 tons into LEO the project is dead.

NASA builds a billion dollar Prima far infrared space telescope from JWST leftovers, mapping star formation and hunting water in planet disks! #NASA #Prima #FarInfrared #Stars #WaterInSpace
Video
NASA is building a billion-dollar space telescope called Prima using James Webb leftovers, including a spare mirror and Cardiff detectors. This mission explores far-infrared wavelengths, maps star formation across cosmic history, and hunts for water in planet-forming disks. Using passive cooling instead of complex cryocoolers, it faces a ten-year deadline with high stakes. Subscribe for updates on this groundbreaking project! Another great video. The coefficient of performance discussion brought back fond memories of using pulse tube cryocoolers in grad school. 8 kW compressor... ~40 W of cooling at ~50 K, and ~1 W at ~4 K, using helium as the refrigerant. We used an ADR to get down to 50 mK from there. Fun topic!

I have over the past few days discovered mad engineer Hyperspace Pirate on YouTube. From exploding bridgewire detonations to homemade cryocoolers and homemade ethene factories for refrigerant and much more. One cute doggie. No blood, light burns. Three Thumbs up.

The hubris on this guy, combined with the credulous write-up, is really something. Just read this section and tell me he’s not high on his own supply. And maybe the worst part: this is happening while his buddy in the White House is hoping to strip NASA — which should be working on this — for parts.

Radiative cooling of a spacecraft is easy to get wrong. We had several issues with this early on in the space program. We fly IR sensors with a mass of insulated superfluid helium but we do not try to build cryocoolers for it because the radiator area would be HUGE and heavy. 1/2

Space cooling kills margins. Heat rejection demands massive radiators. Power-hungry cryocoolers spike costs. Orbital data centers chase hype. Reality: terrestrial edges win on physics and capex.
