2) SHA-256 - it's the most boring (complimentary) cryptographic hash function around
October 24, 2024 at 1:35 AM
3) BLAKE3 - a cryptographic hash function that also uses merkle trees to go fast
October 24, 2024 at 1:36 AM
4) MD5 - people wish it was a cryptographic hash function, but these days we know it has negligible collision resistance. it's fun to break.

basically, yes. comments will stay as far as I remember, but all the other metrics break, as they store a cryptographic hash of the post to prevent altering

"Goetterdaemmerung's corpus hemorrhaged through cryptographic hash, eschaton pooling in existential void beneath fluorescent hum. photons whispering prayers" is a garbage sentence that GPT-5 loves.

You shouldn't be using LLMs as a judge of good fiction writing. Non-fiction is better, though

This project broke GitHub.

If OpenSSL is Ikea, llhash is Lego. Building blocks to work from, but not a room full of tools and raw material.

A rapid prototyping kit for CTFs.

It is the fastest (on x86_64) open source implementation of most algorithms it supports.

I released {secretbase} 1.1.0 today. github.com/shikokuchuo/...

Adds optimized base58check and CBOR encoding.

This is a zero-dep #rstats package that wraps C code for hashing and binary/text encoding often needed in web development contexts. It also handles the file/object hashing for {targets}.

y'all... I just looked up "blockchain" and found something you might wanna see... I recognize some of those phrases in the AT Protocol.. merkle trees, timestamps, cryptographic hashes!? 😨

Hash functions are apparently increasingly unsafe to use as an RNG in cryptographic (i.e. adversarial) contexts!
Computer scientists have shaken a core cryptographic assumption. A new paper shows how to trick proof systems, vital for blockchains, into certifying lies by exploiting the "randomness" generated by hash functions.
Computer Scientists Figure Out How To Prove Lies | Quanta Magazine
An attack on a fundamental proof technique reveals a glaring security issue for blockchains and other digital encryption schemes.

New post: the design behind secretbase, a 40KB streaming hash package I maintain.

The entire source package is smaller than most hex sticker PNGs.

Hash large objects with constant memory. Powers targets pipelines. Plus CBOR encoding comes to R.

Cryptographic hashes are central to how IPFS works. Without a short, unique identifier like a cryptographic hash, content addressing wouldn't be possible. Learn about the important characteristics of hashes in our documentation: docs.ipfs.tech/concepts/has...

it isn't that easy either on how the protocol works.

while true, editing isn't that hard (I can do it already), it breaks all interactions (reply, like, quote, repost) because they store a cryptographic hash of the post as how it was when you interacted with it

the approach we've discussed a bit is to split out DID doc metadata from PLC ops. so the ops are really just about cryptographic keys.

DID doc data could then be a separate object referenced by hash (and not retained by the directory after updates)

Signal is deploying ristretto255 as part of their usernames feature! 🔐

They appear to be using a Pedersen hash over the ristretto255 group, along with a Sigma/Schnorr Proof-of-Knowledge of its correctness, to hide usernames from the Signal servers.

If you want to see an utterly mad codebase, I have a project for that:

github.com/ryancdotorg/...

I wrote Python scripts that generate C preprocessor macros which are evaluated to generate C and assembly source files which contain yet more macros which are then finally compiled.

anyway. it is definitely the case that if you can get the input back out of a cryptographic hash function, the hash is broken. that is the exact thing they are designed to prevent.
