#crystallographic
The spinning blurred early X-ray images, making precise atomic mapping difficult. Olmstead helped overcome this by co-crystallizing them w/host molecules to hold the spheres in place. Her crystallographic work produced clear structures of fullerenes, advancing #nanotechnology research.

Structural biology is in an era of dynamics & assemblies but turning raw experimental data into atomic models at scale remains challenging. @minhuanli.bsky.social and I present ROCKET🚀: an AlphaFold augmentation that integrates crystallographic and cryoEM/ET data with room for more! 1/14.

This is one of my favorite images, taken by my amazing colleague Nick Tosca. It's a single microfossil that I picked with a micromanipulator and placed on a transmission electron microscopy grid. We did this to examine the crystallographic structure of the apatite minerals that make up the fossil

Can Z, the number of formula units per unit cell, be a fraction? A report of the IUCr Commission on Crystallographic Nomenclature
The Commission on Crystallographic Nomenclature has concluded that, in some rare, carefully justified circumstances, Z, the number of formula units in the unit cell, may be a fraction.

Ultrahigh-pressure crystallographic passage towards metallic hydrogen - Nature
The observation of the transition from hcp H2 to a post-hcp structure with a six-fold larger supercell at pressures above 212 GPa is reported, indicating the trend of H2 polymerization through molecular association.

"Photo 51" was the X-ray diffraction pattern that revealed the internal structure of DNA, produced by PhD student Raymond Gosling working under Rosalind Franklin's direction at King's College in London in 1952.

Let's talk about how CORK & a PAPERCLIP played a central role in DNA's discovery.
