If someone wants to talk to me about bioaccumulation of Cs137 in tissue abs biological half-life versus physics half life we can go there

Oh fascinating.

Today I learned that apparently the gamma associated with Cs137 decay…

…is actually because a large majority fraction of Cs137 decays into Barium137m* which emits gamma when it drops to ground.

*a metastable nuclear isomer.

Hat Merz das bei Dobrindt so "bestellt"?

How in the name of god would Cs137 end up at the processing plant?!?

We have unanswered questions.

Where did the release happen? (we have a guess)
When did it happen? How long in duration?
What is the source term? (Cs137)
How large was the release?
Who did the source originally belong to?
Why wasn't it caught before release?

I was under the impression one doesn’t just bring an easily broken or opened glass jar of Cs137 in for food irradiation?!?

This also says something about the capability to detect eg Cs137 at ports.

Contamination with radioactive UF6 or metallic uranium isn't that bad really. U235 is nowhere near as bad as Sr90, Cs137, etc. as in its fission products. There will not be significant fission products unless there has been a criticality incident. Otherwise it's a plain old boring alpha emitter.

A pretty spicy Cs-137 Spark Gap tube!
Unfortunately all the markings have rubbed off so I’m unable to identify it but based on the high doserate, I’m guessing the original activity was 5uCi!
If anyone has info on this tube, let me know!

And with a well fitting mask & anti-contam clothing the risk of internal or even skin contamination can be enormously reduced. And pripyat is what pripyat is at this point the 1/2 lives of Sr90 & Cs137 are 28ish & 30ish years so…

We are fortunate that our varied plots of land don't have Cs137 all over. I checked at least one with the gamma-ray spectrometer.

so you can download .csv and view it in InterSpec, for example 👍 here's some quick Cs137 (a very low activity source)

汚染土壌は県外で最終処分という話、あーでもないこーでもないやってるうちにCs137の半減期(30年)が過ぎて数字的に汚染なくなりましたので別に県内外のどこで最終処分してもいいよね、というオチがあり得ると思っている

A spent fuel pool would be pretty interesting. A lot of Cs137 in one place without full containment.

Note, I'm not so sure about your assertion. Chernobyl happened to blow up due to a LoCA, I imagine blowing it up with weapons would have the same effect?

As the son of a radiochemist whose entire career was studying radioactive wildlife, I’m immediately wondering how many mSV I’d get eating a pound of this shrimp and how many pounds I’d need to eat to ingest a single milligram of Cs137.

Without the dosage data it’s a non-story.

Surprenant
Merci

Why in the world would CS137 be anywhere near food?
September 23, 2025 at 11:00 AM
This is rather strange, I wish they would tell the concentration. My bet is this is not due to "insanitary conditions", I see no scenario where Cs137 would be involved in the preparation. It is most likely a natural ingestion by the shrimp - and a contamination (waste dump?) at the fishing site.
