For all my critiques of the funding disparity between the UCs and the CSUs, I would never wish this upon my colleagues in the UC system.

California used to promise free tuition at UCs and CSUs. My tax proposal would generate over $8 billion—more than double what it would take to make the final two years of university tuition-free for every Californian.

Discontinuing SATs has been a disaster but we’re supposed to act like everyone who doesn’t get into a UC has been banished from ever going to college. Some of the CSUs are more selective than lower ranked UCs!

Progressive corporate taxes allow us to give relief to struggling corporations, implement two years of free tuition at our UCs and CSUs, and get rid of income taxes on Californians making under $100,000. That's a real affordability solution that protects businesses and families alike.

For 100 years, California promised a tuition-free education. Today, UC students face $15,588/year before room and board. As Governor, I will restore that promise and eliminate in-state tuition at UCs and CSUs. That’s thousands back in your pocket and a real investment in our economy.

Hard at this point not to see the gutting of the CSU as tied to the tech industry's growing stranglehold over state policy. By choking off research at the CSUs while making them beachheads of AI dependence, we're locking CA's political economy to that industry.
The California State University system is not just any public university system, it is the largest with 400,000+ students over 20+ campuses. It is the bellwether on the state of mass higher education in the US. The state? Crumbling.

Also a problem: that we've made these name-brand colleges too important. California needs more UCs and probably many more CSUs and people should be able to get good jobs from CSU Nowhere.
