someone has to do the things! someone has to talk to people! or run the cyclometer or put the shit in Petri dishes or kill that rats or do whatever! the computer can just move numbers around and it's *really* at that but there is more than that!
The real concern I have is that people will decide that the magic box can give the right answer without needing the hard-won data (from expensive experiments) and just stop funding us because why bother when the magic box can tell you what dark matter is.

I've been hit once. My cyclometer froze at 26mph, so I know how fast I was going when I was hit. Someone turned into me illegally while I was crossing a street. It happened directly in front of a police officer, and I was generally physically Ok, so I lucked out. Fortunately it didn't spook me away.

I have a really cheap wireless cyclometer that essentially does this. The magnet on the wheel trips a reed switch that’s connected to a tank circuit and produces a rudimentary rf pulse per rotation.

Fantastic article! There's a lot of people who were forgotten. I would only add that there was more Polish scientists working on breaking Enigma than one person and they also made machines, like cyclometer. It should't be omitted imo:)

First time I was hit by a car my cyclometer read 29 mph. I survived mostly uninjured, but I had to use all the jujitsu rolls I was trained in consecutively & reflexively to extend, disperse, & reduce momentum over 30-40 ft & 8-10 impacts of rolls & break falls. It still split my helmet in the back.
